8 steps forward.
Completed the last of this passel of aluminum pistons this morning. Straightforward lathe and mill work; same design (based on that of the Upshur Farm Engine) as the other IC engine builds I've done. The only problems came when my mind wandered due to familiarity and repetition...but only one piston scrapped. Piston rings are nominal 1/16 inch Viton o-rings.

Ron

Thank you, CNR!

The next task will be whittling out the crankshaft, starting from a bar of 1.125" 1144 "Stressproof" steel. It is actually very similar to the crank for the Curtiss K, of which I made two, with just slightly wider throws and a slightly shorter stroke. So I'll have to beware of the "familiarity" trap again...

Ron

Hello Ron,

You should be able to 'crank' out that part fairly quickly.

Sometimes, it can be a long and winding road

You guys cra(n)k me up.

No cranking on it today though. A gorgeous day here so we drove over to the coast. Watched multiple whales spouting and breaching, a pair of bald eagles resting in a tree, the Coast Guard doing a tow-in training session into Depoe Bay, and a typically raucous crowd of sea lions on a dock in Newport.
Regards,
Ron

Looks like a gorgeous day at the beach!  Nice pics of the Yaquina Bay Bridge and Lighthouse too!  ;D

I was at the beach this last weekend, and it wasn't nearly as good of weather.  It rained on us quite a bit over the weekend.  But we still had a lot of fun!

Oregon beaches, what more can you ask for?

Can't really disagree on Oregon beaches, though we have a few nice ones up our way too.  That crank looks like a fun part to build, watching with interest still.  :DrinkPint:

I didn't realize there is a Hispano Model E in a museum where I live (Calgary). Have not been there in years but now I really must revisit. Watching the project build with interest!

The collection includes iconic engines like the Rolls-Royce Merlin 224, also known as “The Engine that Won the War,” the wildly successful and ahead of its time Hispano-Suize Model E, as well as the

Ron, I've been studying your CAD drawings in terms of how cooling water will be circulated. Disclosure - I've been eyeing Mercedes & BMW engines of a similar era so have not looked too hard at Hispo mono-block drawings specifically by comparison.

(my crude annotation) on the FS engine, I assume cool water from the pump enters the lower part of jacket/block, flows upward within the liner/jacket area, into the cylinder head water cavity, collects into the top of radiator (path not immediately clear), cooled & back into the pump inlet. On your CAD sections & 3D model I cant make out how water is within the head section. Can you elaborate on that detail. Or maybe water is confined to the cylinder/jacket area because producing the equivalent water cavity in the head area is the tricky bit? (In the case of Mercedes & BMW the cylinder assembly is a welded affair which yields this cavity but that's a another subject I'll hopefully post on later).  -Peter
