Producer gas powered tractor
« on: July 07, 2024, 09:31:45 AM »
Whilst driving to collect my granddaughter I saw this finely restored Swiss Bührer tractor with a producer gas system as well as a winch and a mower bar. It must have been an interesting task to manage the gas producer and the mower at the same time  ::)
Best regards

Roger

Hi Roger.

What a beautifully restored tractor….
From the layout I’m guessing the producer is fuelled by wood? This is an area I would love to get involved in. With so many of our early engines running on a gas that no longer exists on a commercial basis the obvious answer would be to make it ourselves.

   Graham.

No big deal.
Engine sucks gas through producer.
More power ,more suck,more gas.
It is an excellent SI motor fuel with around 10% Hydrogen that reacts, very fast, with oxygen in nearly all mixture ratios.
Ready to work after 10-15 minutes from cold.
Most local transport in Denmark was done this wayWW2 and the woods looked bad after that.
It gives a lot of very poissonous tar, that by the way, burn very well in prechamber diesels.

Yes it is wood fuelled, Bührer quoted that 2.5 kg of dry wood was equivalent to 1 litre of fuel (I assume petrol).
