A cursed free style twin steam!

(1/4) > >>

Team ricky:
Hi guys,

They say the best bits are the last 10% of the unknown!

On that I’m free styling a twin steam engine out of bits and pieces ;)

The intention is to build a twin occilator side by side , the cranks will be meshed with steel gears with a central shaft / output gear

With that the engines will rotate in the same direction (3 gears total)

All gears same tooth count and diameter

Question is on this build is the crank relationships and steam input relationship

Am I wrong to go with 3 gears same DOR

Or should I go with 2 gears counter rotation!

Thank in advance if anyone has experience here :)

Interesting setup! I'd be tempted to make the cranks turn in opposite direction to cancel out vibrations and add a little eye candy. Either way would work though.
Seems like somewhere on the forum would be some details on oscillator design. If not, the Elmer Verburg articles on his oscillators should have the info you need. Might be able to take his layout and scale it up or down as needed?

Team ricky:
I’ll have a little look around ;)

I think you’re right my initial interest in doing the project was the contra rotation and a central output shaft …

Should look pretty cool when set up and running, The output shaft in the middle is going through a square section of brass and that will be silver soldered between the engines to join them at the base plates and give a central low (marine use) output

Team ricky:
My gut feeling is time them at 180 degrees to each other and make the inlet and exhaust common but on the correct side of each standard!?

I’m figuring that I have 4 power strokes so any division of 360 by 4 should work fine ??

90-180-270-360

Waiting on opening opinions!!

Cheers!

I'd go for 90 degrees, or 270, so you don't have both engines at the end of their stroke at the same time - when the engine would not self-start.  At 90 degrees one will be  on full power mid-stroke when the other is going over dead centre.  This will also even out the steam consumption - and provide a smoother power output.  And provide a more interesting exhaust sound.
