A lovely new aircon for my workshop

I've lusted after one of these heat pump units for years. Finally got one installed today. Whisper quiet and very mean on leccy!

I agree they are very handy to have. My Air con is currently silently (32 dBs) ticking over keeping the entire house a comfortable 18 degrees all for free

P.S. I assume it is mounted over 5m from the boundary to avoid needing planning permission

Jo I thought that air source heat pumps were now classed as permitted developement, England needs them to be 1m from Boundry, Wales 3m or is the greater distance when they are used for cooling?

Two of my clients have them, one is probably just 1m and the other about 2m neither needed planning.

Yes they are permitted development but the sound output Level must not exceed 42dB at the boundary and to guarantee this the council down here requires them to be over 5m from the boundary. My new neighbour is a planning enforcement officer and if they get a complaint and the pump is under 5m from the boundary they will force the owner to move it. It is just easier to put it further away.

Similar here and it makes a nice change from all the cold weather we have been having. I suppose you office types that have been used to working in an airconditioned office have just go used to that sort of enviroment and can't work in extreams.

That 5m rule is not going to work too well when they stop you having gas boilers. All those new builds would only be able to fit them if the frontage was approx 11m wide or more and that is going to rule out at least 75% of  properties.

The ones my Clients have are certainly a lot noisier than a fridge, more like washing machine sort of volume and as I say close to boundries

I did look it up and the rules are the same for hot or cold use. 1M from edge of unit to boundry.

Nice heatpump!  Maybe someday I'll get something like that in my shop.  Until then, I just dress warmer in the winter and go in the house earlier in the summer.

I was inspired John. My Aircon supplier is coming back on Thursday to fit the Aircon in the workshop 

As John did not provide his numbers I will: Mine is a 2.5KW system, costing £850 complete, including installation. Its only money  we have to keep our expensive tools rust free somehow.


I normally run a 1.5KW night storage heater for 2 hours a day mid winter, topping up with portable heaters. The night storage heater costs about 30p a day, plus 30p hour for the portable heater. I am hoping that this system will cost about the same as the night storage heater to run but I won't have to use any top up heaters. My workshop is a little bigger than John's

My homespun 3Kw solar PV system has just passed the 13Mwhr generated mark this month. If anyone is interested they’re definitely a good buy. Battery backup would have been even better had I been able to afford it….

My 14 year old 4KW array has over that time generated 57MWh and made me £16K tax free over the original installation price  . I still wouldn't waste my money on batteries they are too expensive but a solar immersion heater controller is well worth investing in instead  I've had nearly free hot water every year since I fitted mine  (in the depth of Winter for about 8 weeks I have to use the immersion heater on a timer to top the heat up    ) .


The panels are also going to supplement the cost of running the Aircon in the house/workshop
