Red One
« on: June 06, 2024, 06:20:17 PM »
Another Engine I bought last summer is this Red One.  I don’t have any info on the maker or age of the model.  The frame is a brass casting, flywheel is steel.  It ran as soon as I put some air to it.   So it looks like a bath and some new paint is in order, as well as making a base.  Here’s a few before pics.

And some after pics.  It was a pretty easy clean and repaint job.  The flywheel still has some patina and pits in it, just for character.  I had to make a ¼-40 MTP acorn style plug for what I assume was the original supply line.  I put the new inlet low on the stand for a cleaner look.  Not sure I like the brass acorn nuts, I may change to nickel plated to match the rods and flywheel.

And a video of it running on about 10 psi.

Thanks for looking in.  Yes a quick www search turned up info and photos of Empire Metal Ware B-30 models. Seems to have been made starting in the 1920's, mounted atop an electric boiler.  Made in Two Rivers, WI, so that's pretty local to me.  Thanks again.

That has come up nicely

When I looked at it last night I thought it must have come off of something as the two mountings are a but unusual. Having now had a google for Empire I can now see how it was mounted and with the steam coming up one of the mountings that explains the position of the integral valve.

Jason, your good observation led me to some more google searching.  It turned up this photo of a B31 variant, vertical mounting.  My casting has a 1/4-40 MTP thread for the steam whistle as shown.  I thought it was for inlet.   It's interesting the round head screw for a plug where they drilled the passage to the valve and cylinder. I've seen that in most of the photos online.  It doesn't matter, mine is finished as is.  Thanks to all for looking. ;)

Funny enough I have some photos in a folder that I named "Future Projects" which I had also called Red One and it too is boiler mounted but I would make it free standing which is how it was shown in the first photos that attracted it to me, no whistle though. Later found out it was made by Ernst Plank

There is another red one in the folder, Maybe Dave can identify that too ;)

Jason, those are some amazing photos.  I like to imagine how i could build one from bar stock.  The toys from that era sure had some great presence to them.  I grew up in a time of plastic throw away toys.  Unfortunately I don't have any info on the rocking cylinder model.  It sure is an intriguing design.
