Chris, one of the members of this forum (Crueby) has done a lot of nickel plating.  You might check some of his threads.  I believe he's provided a nice explanation of how he does it here somewhere.  And he wrote an article for Live Steam & Outdoor Railroading Magazine on it too.  That should give you some good info.

Kim
Yes, I  posted the contents of the article on nickle plating a while back on this forum somewhere, not home at the moment so cant search easily. Easy to do, the chemical  kits are a waste, a few bucks for the nickle rod plus household ingredients gets you the exact same thing the charge crazy money for!

Nice 👌

I’ll order some nickel and wait to read up!

Nice  thank you !

That’s a good article on getting good results ;)

It’s going to add material to the journals , I was wondering what clearance to give the bearings ….

Collage days are long away from me ! Can’t remember the rule of thumb ….

I guess if I land between two reamers 7.9 and 7.95 I can pick the best one ☝️

Ie sand off the nickel go 7.9 or leave the nickel if  the journals are 7.925say and use the 7.95 reamer on the bearings ….

A good progress.
I like the crankshaft. Now come the crankshaft bearings next?

I like the crankshaft, but don't over think it. heat treatment, nickel plating? Its a model engine crankshaft for goodness sake, don't bother, leave it like it is. I don't even use silver steel, free cutting mild steel would be just fine, though when I was doing a big crankshaft for my Stuart  gas engine I did get a blank flame cut from structural plate

I’m just interested in processing and building I’ve never done before ;)

Let’s face it none of it’s needed just a want !

Bearing stick is being squared today ;) hopefully tomorrow I may get a couple sorted !

Here’s past projects ;)

Fully scale operating undercarriage ! 4 ish months for just that and 9 months for the scratch building…… 40 cc flat twin motor

Beautiful and Impressive Model  :praise2:

Not exactly a small one either (certainly helps with adding details)  ;) - how big ?

It’s 75” wing span and around 18 lbs all up ;)

Goes like the clappers !!

I fly it maybe twice a year….

Did a bit more today preparing halfway the bearing stick ….
It’s alot of milling for my little machine and it get hot so I have to stop and rest it all !!

So I got distracted and did the bores instead later on in the day ;)

I have just experienced nailing a dimension to exact measurement between the bore centres which I’m chuffed about !

Cylinder honing to go and I’ll probably make pistons pretty soon

Cheers!

It was a challenge to tool up for the boring …

I in the end went with drills, all the way to pre reamer size but had a stumble in the drill shank and reamer … I am locked into Proxxons collets which have fixed sizes and won’t grip concentric unless you are within 0.1 mm … pain because the max collet is 10mm !

My stepped shank drill was 9.5 so I made a sheathe from a feeler gauge and it ran true !

Next I got out the turn between centre kit to reduce the reamer shank to 10mm and the finish is super !

Here’s the bearing retainer blocks sorted ;)

Bit odd the drawing is off in terms of overall height , bit annoying but can be over come by using slimmer shells on the bearings themselves, I’ll still have plenty of bearing material ……

The centre line of the crank is to drawing so all good there !

As concentricity of the Crank and its bearings are some of the most important parts of any piston engine - you are doing well and it looks good
