Df's lego engine thread
« on: April 16, 2024, 06:44:13 PM »
Instead of creating a new thread every time I build a new engine, I'm going to post them here and then it doesn't matter if anybody cares or not.

So let's start with this quickly built "OHC"....

And here's my rotary valve opposed piston. I really like this one.

This was one of like 5 lego turbine speed records broken in a week  The guy who broke this one with 21,000 rpm broke his own record a day later with the same turbine at 43,000 rpm. Nobody's broken that yet..

These are some very interesting engines. Are these made of specialty Lego pieces or parts of kits? I have never put Lego together so know absolutely nothing about it apart from Lego Masters on tely.

Lego vacuum engines typically use mostly basic pieces. There aren't any parts specifically for them but the short cranks for Lego fake engines are commonly used. Some people 3d print parts but I think that's cheating.  ;D

This guy, Erin Lassley, is thought to have semi-popularized LVEs though the first known Lego engine was supposedly built by Matthias Wandel in 1985.  https://m.youtube.com/@LazloNQ

I built this engine in April 2023. It's a double acting single cylinder and it was my first working LEGO engine. It hadn't run for a few months and some parts had been taken off it to use on other engines. For its 1st birthday I decided to put it back together and make some improvements to the ports and piston for better performance.

A while ago I said I probably wouldn't build another flat 4. Well, here I am with another flat 4! My original idea (a really long time ago) was to build an oscillating v8. That didn't happen, but I ended up building this very smooth running, single acting oscillating flat 4. The main framework of the engine doubles as a manifold, and the crankshaft also passes through it. Because half the engine is effectively turned upside down, one bank "exhausts" out the top and the other out the bottom, as you can see in the attached photos. Here's a video of it running: https://m.youtube.com/shorts/YA9s5NuIPjE

Nicely done  :) Keep it up you will come across some machine tools at a sensible price at sometime. I sold my 'spare' machines to a work colleague a couple of months ago. It would probably have cost more than their value to ship them to you.
Best regards

My favorite combination of builds yet, my double acting engine and a twin stick 8 speed transmission.

Here's the full 13 minute video if anyone feels like watching it, but basically it's a sequential 4 speed going into a close ratio 2 speed or splitter.

Dude, that's pretty slick.  I like the sound of the engine, especially nice when you tweak the throttle :praise2:.  Nice touch.

Here's something similar to a U configuration but with a third crankshaft. I'm calling it an E configuration. This is an "E3" with 2x2 stud pistons. My 2x2s are always finicky but I'd like to try a 4x4 E6 (or maybe an E9?? )

And on the subject of weird LEGO vacuum engines, how about a 5x5 piston with rotary valves! This also has a counterweighted crank and can run much faster than this but the vacuum filter was super clogged in this video.

Those are great, Miles.  You come up with some interesting variations.

Need a model for one to drive now.  Perhaps a ferris wheel or merry go round.

Those are pretty cool, I will have to show that to my grandson He loves making Lego Cars and Tractors.
Excellent work!
