got the flat 4 running
« on: February 16, 2024, 05:43:25 AM »
Today I decided to return to the flat 4 LVE (lego vacuum engine) after giving up on it a month ago. I modified the valves to be crank driven rather than cam driven, and sealed up the manifold with tape. Full video when I get around to putting it together but in the meantime here's a Short of it running. https://m.youtube.com/shorts/g5koSY1CWXA

It's almost like the faster I spin it, the more times it goes around.....

It's going very well 👍

Do you have to oil the parts? Or does the plastic slide well.

It's oiled with grapeseed oil, olive oil is recommended but I don't think there's a difference and it's cheaper. You can get away with not oiling some engines but this one is drenched in oil because it's almost impossible to turn over without lube. It's good measure to oil all LVE's though, it increases power and speed by quite a noticeable amount.

The first "engine" I built, which failed horribly, I lubricated with graphite, not wanting to use WD-40. That was a very bad idea. At the time I didn't know about using olive oil. Turns out olive/grapeseed oil is actually great, it wipes off easily and it's harmless and doesn't stink so it isn't a big deal if there's a little bit left on the pieces.

Very nice, thanks for sharing.  I sure applaud your ingenuity in putting these machines together  :praise2:  .  It sure is a treat when they run, especially after a few difficulties.  great work!
I've met a few modellers from Dodge County, someday I would like to visit the tractor show down there.

Thanks.

If you happen to see a '57 Intersmashible A100 Golden Jubilee pickemup truck while you're there, that'd be my grandpa.
