Excellent work on the columns  :praise2:  :praise2:

I have a neat V block as part of my Hemingway Keats angle plate. As Marv says having a clamp which bolts on and doesn't hang over the side is a benefit.

Neat v block, I  hadn't  noticed ones with the end holes to bolt the block down vertically before either.

Hello Chris

It's called a Keats angle plate clamp set. Designed specifically for mounting on a face plate.

It is the journey that matters, not the destination

Sometimes, it can be a long and winding road

More little parts - made up the top brackets for the angled stay rods, and got the holes drilled/tapped in the bottom of the cylinder blocks for all four vert/angled columns/rods.

Next up? Think its time to start laying out the steam chests and the mounting holes in the ends of the cylinder blocks...

On to the steam chests. Cut down some rectangles from larger bar, and have started taking them to finished width/length...

Got the steam chests laid out and cut out the inside with a small end mill

followed by another set of passes with a slightly larger one that could reach all the way through to clean up the edges

Next steps will be to start drilling mounting holes in the steam chests, covers, and cylinder ends...

I always like to take one last pass, a couple thou, as a climbing cut. That leaves a really smooth finish.

Steam chest mounting hole time. After laying out the pattern and getting the number of turns on the cranks per hole, started by drilling the clearance holes in the chests and the covers (clamped together). Both sets were drilled before moving on.

Then used the chests as the drill guides for the holes in the cylinder ends. I could have just spot drilled the pattern and tap drilled, but by using the chests as drill guides any little variance in the original holes would be accounted for. Also, it let me align the chest onto the cylinder end, with the top/bottom plates to account for the overhang on the core blocks. That was done on the bench and a large parallel clamp tightened down to transfer it to the machine vise. Started by running the clarance sized drill down each hole and just into the cylinder end, to make a dimple like a spot drill would.

Then switched to the tap drill and went around the pattern again. Since the tap drill is smaller, if I had started with it rather than the clearance drill, it might have skated at the bottom of the hole. The dimple made with the clearance drill kept things centered in the holes.

The clamp blocked the last two holes, so a second clamp was put on over on the other side, then the first one taken off, to drill the last two holes.

First cylinder block end drilled, ready to tap. One more block to drill the same way...
