Patience or lack thereof

Funny enough tonight I was thinking about how much more patient I was in the machine shop lately compared to when I first started machining maybe 20 years ago.  I was actually fabricating something out of a few pieces and using a hacksaw to get the rough parts ready to silver solder, where as before I would have immediately jumped to going and buying a piece of metal of the required size.


Well, I was manually trimming the pieces down on the mill (its a cnc) and sure enough, what do I do but get impatient with the cutting feed rate I've set (nice and slow for stainless) and use rapid to try and approach the part.  I approached it alright, and into at rapid too.  So much for being more patient.   


Another strange observation from this - how is it I was able to instantly find the shattered remnants of my 1/2" carbide endmill off to one side in the pile of steel swarf in the mill, but can't find the parts I fail to catch when parting off on the lathe?

I get it Mike....and sometimes being impatient costs more than other times
..I've finally gotten to the point where when I'm 6 ops into a 7 op part...and "Im not feeling it"   I know better now and just shut it down and come back another time.....

I dont want to admit how many parts I've scrapped before I became more enlightened

Now that's a really clever cut off catcher Marv. With just the one's I've seen links to, you really need to produce a book with everything you've thought up. I'm sure there's dozens, or maybe hundreds I've never seen as well. Not many have the mind set you seem to, or can figure out simple logical solutions to shop problems. I never would have thought of that method, yet it's obvious after seeing it.

I'm not about to write a book but there is something almost as good.  I use the homemadetools forum as a collection area for my tools and ideas for a number of reasons...

friendly, helpful, intelligent owner/operator
pictures hosted on site so no chance of a Photoshop extortion scheme
handy way to document all the things my heirs will find in my toolboxes when I'm gone
and they provide monetary prizes for good ideas

Whilst you procrastinate about building Marv's rather nifty catcher - a piece of cardboard with a fold down the middle, balanced under the chuck as you part off, will catch almost anything... except the really really small stuff (which is where Marv's tool comes into its own)

Or, for the larger partoffs, add a swarf tray to the carriage as I did here...
