Back in the workshop and I have milled the cylinders top and bottom for the port entry slots. .The connecting ports have to be drilled in position and these are at an angle of 58 degrees. I have made a mandrel for this as i wish to see how deep the drill needs to penetrate. The mandrel is made from square bar stock to be held in the vice at the correct angle as the cylinder is curved in several planes and difficult to hold in the vice , also I can see when the drill enters the ports .

Great progress Willy, and clever idea with that mandrel.

Good to see you back in the workshop.

Hi All thanks for the comments and I have now drilled out the porting ..I have used this adjustable angle device that is used on the drawing pad .
So still lots of small items to make  and the next jobs are the pistons and the slide valves .......

Hi Chris , yes and one uses all the senses when modelling  especially listening  for potential disasters and even smelling when things might get to hot etc etc
Thanks  and cheers

The slide valve is now fitted , at the valve is filed a tight fit in the steam chest and then fixed in place with a clamp to stop moving whilst it is centre drilled through the gland , It is then cross filed for the cross nut. it is then drilled in situ and drilled and tapped 5BA The valve will then be removed and a sliding fit filed for a smooth working fit.

I have now been filing the valve with this Handy clamp that fits in the vice ...also this is a tapping device that I made about 40 years ago and it is constructed using two small  bicycle free wheels with the teeth ground off ,  it is handy in the lathe and drilling machine when there is limited room to turn it ...I am using this on one of the cylinder blocks ...

I have now made the inlet and exhaust port pipe flanges and they are all 7/32nd X 40 threads but slightly different OD's so they don't get mixed up ..

Looking great!  What goes on the end, looks like space for a third cylinder  but its a twin.

Hi  Chris. This casting set was built for a boat and there was a water pump for the boiler in that space.. I will endeavour to find a pic of it ..

cheers

I am now fitting the cylinder parts together and with the older 1949  drawings there is an entry part for the steam to enter the cylinders as shown by the diagonal line on the drawings for the upper and lower covers. This is not shown on the later Bertinat plan. Also I have made the pistons , and to grip them for screwing onto the piston rods without damaging them I have used some modified  3/4" oilite bushes that have been sawn with a slot to grip in the lathe  or a jubilee clip. I will also use these bushes for further work on the crossheads.  I have tried the cylinders operation with the slide valves and I can blow and suck the piston  movement  just with my own breath ??!!
