Willy,
an interesting start to the stand.
I want to remember that for later.

I have now machined up both standards and have made a jig to drill the base holes.  As there is not much room at the base once drilled i need to make a pin drill to attach a raised portion to give a good seating for the nuts. I do have some pin drills made from small milling slot drills but there is not much room for the chuck to turn without sticking the legs so will have to make a different one from some silver steel... Some pics

Hi Chris thanks, and I am making an inside pin drill   ie there is a hole in the cutter that will fit over a projecting pin/ssrew that will locate the cutter in place. I will try this out on a piece of perspex to see how it works ...I have turned up a piece of silver steel and hardened it to try it out and it seems to work ok. I don't have a proper cutter grinder so the profile will be a bit experimental. ... Also I have modified my Myford tailstock to lock the tapered morse taper tools in place to prevent them turning .

Very interesting setup  with the pin guided cutter, never would have thought of that. Should keep things lined up nicely, the hole is a long way out from the chuck!

You are making good progress, one other option with the spot facing is to make a "back spot facer" similar to what you have but the cutter fixes to the "pin"

I also built a flat countersink for machining the castings for the VDH (Versatile Dividing Head). It is very useful.

Hi all for the pics and the comments , I have now bored out the recesses on the bronze and it has worked out well and the recesses will have short brass plugs to lift the bolting height to clear the legs ... so the other one to do and also the base to mill flat ....

Hello Willy, you are making good progress. It looks like the bronze material can be processed well.

Hi All , thanks a n yes the bronze is shaping up well and I have made some plugs with some brass thick walled 1/4" rod and the holes are actually 6BA sized. This came from Stumpshaw steam engine Rally from one of the stalls that has masses of offcuts and other military stuff !!. The tube is turned to size and faced and then sawn off with a junior hacksaw to size. because there is a burr left on the plugs they can be pressed in with the burr downwards, and stay in place ??!!! this means they don't have to be soldered in .

These are nice details and make a casting look authentic. Well done.

Hi "M"  thanks and I do try to make my models with authentic details .. I have now machined the bed plate on the face plate. I have an extra thick flat plate on the face plat that I drill and tap components to save the faceplate integrity and balance. I have been looking at the plans and found that the original drawing and the volume 100 model engineer have mistakes on them regarding the standards ...however the 1980  model engineer construction has the correct dimensions for the top of the casting ?!! On the plans the top is 1-1/4" square but in the 1980 drawing it is 1-3/16th"  X 1-1/4' and this enables the feet to fit on the cast baseplate...and also the hole dimensions are different ....

Hi All, I have now bolted one of the standards to the baseplate and I have achieved this by clamping it with various jigs using the base as a visual reference . the next standard will be adjusted to fit and then drilled and bolted in place. As there is some latitude of precision due to the crosshead linkage available the measurements can be quite a few thou out ??!!!.more pics
