Warrior Double acting twin cylinder steam engine from castings
« on: November 16, 2023, 01:13:49 AM »
I am now starting on a new engine ..the Warrior double acting  twin cylinder vertical steam engine W7 I bought these castings a few years ago with the plans. I have the instructions from E T Westbury that appeared in the 1949  Vol 100 model engineer magazines.  I think there is one casting missing and there was no bar stock , so this a new project and I will have to think about the actual construction but should be able to find similar videos from other people that have made similar models....?

So feeling better but still not 100% so this'll be a lengthy build..

Willy

Hi Chris , thanks and yes ..I have had these castings for a long time and it seems like a good build to get back into model engineering ,  albeit slowly. my hands have also got quite soft and tender ?!!!

Hello Willy,

I will definitely follow your build report.
No matter how long it will take.
I was also able to purchase a set of castings on eBay last year. Unfortunately no blueprint.
But I think it will work that way and I'll take a look at individual details from you.

Greetings Michael

J P Bertinat did an improved version of the Warrior as he did with many engines, might want to take a look at that.

As for online sources I've not seen much for this engine but basic machining would be similar to the more common Stuart D10 and 10V

Looks like a finished one here to inspire you up for auction at Derweatts.

Quite a few other intersting models if you ignore the Loco stuff :LittleDevil:

Hi Michael,   I have noticed that in both your set and mine there are parts missing and included. Your set includes the gear for the water pump that would be situated  on the end of the base casting . yours are missing the main bearing castings and like wise mine is missing 1 of the 4 . Mine is also missing one set for the bottom main piston rod bearings, but yours has two sets for the valve eccentrics ?!. I have the original plans that do not have the water pump drawings. I have the 1949  vol 100  "words and music" that were written up by E.T.Westbury that I can send you  and Jasonb has also sent me the 1980 model engineer plans and instructions that was written up by J.P. Bertinat and I assure you can obtain these from him Via  email .

I am starting this engine by cleaning up and machining the standards with the assembled equipment as this seems to be the most important part to get right as everything else is attached to them and any slight dimensions can be altered to fit, !!

mor to follow...Willy

Hello Willy,

Now I also noticed that the main bearings are missing. Maybe there are 4 eccentric parts for the reverse reversal.
Jason also sent me a description of the engine by email. (thanks again for that)

I would also start with the stands and base. This gives you a good foundation to start with.

I will watch with interest as your engine grows.

Hi All, More work on the standards .. I have been cleaning up the Standards and filing down to clean metal. I then measured them up and worked out how much metal to remove from the rough castings, then scribing the legs to show where to file the metal off and the legs were filed down. The finished 3.125" was then scribed on the top of the standards ready to remove metal.
I have been using the end of my 12" bastard 3 square file and because it is curved it helps to file a flatter profile and also the teeth are also sharper.

Hi, the large files used to clean up the castings and this is quite hard work and very tiring but needs to be done !!

Tha ks Chris , and am now boring out the cross head part of the standard,  it is  bolted  to the faceplate using a mandrel  placed in the bore in the lathe spindle and the tail post. the part is held initially with a live centre and the top of the standard turned down and up to the correct dimension  the tail post is then removed and the standard is bored out to 3/4".

So this is the first one and the next one will follow the same procedure

Willy
