has anyone made a v5 model engine?
« on: October 05, 2023, 09:02:29 AM »
Don't ask me to do it lol, i don't have a lathe. I was looking at driving4answers video   it gives all the figures you need, such as the degrees between each bank of cylinders, and how to offset the middle piston of 3 on the crankshaft for primary balancing. I saw the thread about the v3 engine, but they use balance shafts, so it's an imperfect design, not like the v5.

I had a Ford many years ago with a 2 Litre V4 engine. That had a balance shaft in it. It was quite a poplar engine for a time as it was very compact for a 2 Litre. I’ve always fancied building a V4 vacuum engine I saw once but never got round to it.

there were a few v4, not many though. the wisconsin v4 gets mentioned a lot as it was a good success in its time, no build flaws and superb reliability. maybe i would try a stirling version of the v5 if i have the energy. i'd just like to hear one run, they're so rare since honda has the patent.

Honda's RC211 V5 was a Masterpiece  and Geniusly Inspiring  :praise2:  :praise2:

So they changed the RuleBook in MotoGP after a few years, to stop it, and give the Competition a change .... (high praise from a Suzuki man).

As far as I know - it has never been replicated in any wich way ...!

Volkswagen produced a narrow angle V5, the VR5:

i've seen driving4answers' videos mention the vr5. it's something of a lemon and vw abandoned it. it's of no great interest, though the vr6 was a roaring success.

I would tend to disagree with that. The VR5 had a ten year lifespan and was used when cars were slightly smaller than today so it allowed transverse installation. It also sounds quite nice.

maybe vw were able to fix the balance issues with the vr5 then.
I found a script which simulates hondas rc211v here
https://github.com/GearheadLydia/Engine-Sim-Engines/blob/main/GearheadLydia/Honda_RC211V.mr
it runs just fine in the free version of engine simulator in wine on linux.
it sounds so strange to hear it run, sort of like a cross between a kohler twin and the audi inline 5 cylinder engines. i bet it would be awesome in a road car.

Sorry Roger - but I didn't realize that VW made a VR5 ....

Though to be more precise - Honda's RC211 V5 was a true V5 and in perfect ballance.
