head shim making
« on: June 20, 2023, 07:56:33 PM »
I'm wanting to make an assortment of head shims from brass or possibly copper shim stock material I have on hand. Probably in the 0.002 - 0.005" thickness range. I think I can get away with donut profiles (no bolt holes for cylinders) so nominally 0.95" ID x 1.35" OD x aforementioned thickness range. I'd like to do them in stack-ups of 6 or 7 (5-cyl engine plus some spares). I have some ideas of clamp fixtures for the lathe to first bore the ID's leaving excess outer stock. Then position the stack on another clamp fixture located on the ID to turn the OD's. I'm wondering if anyone has gone down this path & can provide some tips worth mentioning? I'm trying to avoid punches & the like.

I did a job for a customer some years ago making arbor shims for a wafer dicing saw. these were made from from stainless steel sheet of various thicknesses. What I did from memory, was to pressure turn the OD of the blanks then drop them in the lathe mounted fixture to machine the bore, photos attached. If I remember correctly they had a pretty tight tolerance on the bore. As you can see I kept the fixture just in case, but they never requested any more.

Well I got them done. 0.005" thickness. Maybe there was an easier way than these fixtures & how I secured them, I'll have to ponder this some more. But they turned out OK.
This is step-1, turning the ID. I discovered it was easier to cut the stock oversize square vs round, so I will amend my template.

Checking ID fit on head boss. And Step-2 fixture to turn OD.
