Mill engine with generator
« on: May 10, 2023, 02:39:24 PM »
This genset consists of a single cylinder mill engine and a belt driven generator.

The steam engine is a typical mill engine with sliding valve gear and eccentric timing. The cross head is guided in a circular bayonet frame. I got the castings of the steam engine from a local supplier together with drawings. The castings material is of cast iron.

The belt drive is realized with a flat belt and tensioner pulley. The tensioner is loaded with a suspension strut.
The generator was developed in a steam forum. The generator is electrically a three-phase machine and of the multipole design of the early engines.

The casing and bearings parts are castings made from aluminum. After milling and turning the castings further generator parts were provided. The laminated sheet package were purchased, it is easy to get it from electric motor supply business.

The copper coils were hand wound each and fiddled in the slots of the sheet package.

The armature is made of a steel disc in which on the circumference longitudinal slots were milled in. In those slots strong bar magnets were clued in with epoxy.
The genset is arranged on a base plate with a tile floor which gives a nice machine room appearance.

Technical data:
Steam engine:
Stroke:      30mm
Piston diameter:   20mm
Flywheel diameter:   120mm
Generator:
Casing diameter:   120mm
Rotor diameter:    50mm
Power output:      20Watts
No-load voltage:    12V
Speed:         280RPM

Very nice looking model!

Hand-winding that generator must have been a challenge!

Hello Michael,
yes, that is correct, the castings set is from Torsten Schuer. It is the TSM-L30.

Hello Kim,
you met exactly the point. It was a kind of yoking  :) when I said hand-winding coils. I used a simple winding device. The "hand-operation" relates to controling the wire, watching the counter and switching the on/off switch.

That winding setup is very clever, Richard!  The counter is nice so you don't loose count doing it in your head!
