From my window this morning just gone 7am. The sun was so strong I didn't know if the picture would show the mist properly.
Taken in Illogan, Cornwall, UK.

Nice! Also nice to be above that fog rather than in it.

There was heavy fog the night before. I watched as it slowly approached across the field over a period of a few hours. It stopped short of my garden. I think it was probably mist not fog. Very nice either way.

Beautiful picture!

So, what IS the difference between mist and fog?

In the UK we're weather obsessed, so the Met Office have a page about it!  https://www.metoffice.gov.uk/weather/learn-about/weather/types-of-weather/fog/difference-mist-and-fog

It seems that fog is where you can see less than 1000 metres, and mist where you can see further.

Interesting regional differences - over on this side of the pond we (at least in my neighborhood) call a mist a really fine rain.

And a fog is something the monster creeps out of!

Mist is caused by the condensation of water in the air due to warm air coming in contact with colder air (think breathing out warm air on a freezing cold day). Fog consists of water droplets (or ice) suspended in the air i.e. its a low lying cloud, it forms when the difference between the air temperature and the dew point (the water saturation point of air) is 2.5 degrees i.e. the air cannot hold any more water so it forms the droplets. Mist being thinner and lighter does not last as long and is easier to see through.

I think it was mist both times. The morning mist had burnt off by 9am-ish, and the temp hit 72F by the afternoon.

Reminds me of my favourite film, "Play Misty for me". I'll get me coat.
