However as castings are not available for these items do you want to compare total time including making the patterns and then machining them assuming you get the casting done elsewhere? We can discount design time as that would be the same for either

If you are trying to encourage others to build one. I suspect more members are likely to have plates of steel rather than a CNC mill. Jo
Other thread will have to wait until later as some of us go out to work, god knows how I manage to keep completing these models in such little spare time
You CAN teach an old dog new tricks! Will be following this with much interest. Regards, Steve
...was used to cut the decorative weight reduction hole that you often see on full size engines.
Kim, yes it was still cheaper.I bought in the two slices of thick wall tube specifically for this at £12.00 and £14.40, the 35mm bar for the hub and 10mm for the spokes were from longer lengths in stock but cost for those would have been £1 and £3 giving a total of £30.From that I get a ring that can be used for something else but there was some postage to add though as spread over larger orders not a lot.I have just checked the actual cost of a 7" Flywheel from Stuarts and with tax and postage it is £58.60 so my larger one cost me about half. I've not totalled this one up but based on the Real I expect this whole build to have cost about half what a James Coombes casting set would. Not only that but I got the enjoyment of designing it, the mental stimulation from working out how to fabricate it and a whole lot more workshop time for my outlay on materials, not to mention a unique flywheel. Several here say it's about the journey not just getting to the end but why take the motorway(freeway) when the less direct route can be so much more interesting. For anyone in the UK the thick wall tube came from M-Machine https://www.m-machine-metals.co.uk/downloads/metals_catalogue.pdf
