Metrology on a budget
BillTodd:
This Ukrainian guy has made several interesting videos about his home made precision equipment etc.
In this one he shows how he made a very precise set of straight edges from first principles.

Looks like his dial gauge holder is made of a piece of recycled Russian Tank ;D

BillTodd:
He has that eastern European 'make do' attitude 8-)
He makes really nice nosels (wtf ?. I mean models) to illustrate the video . Check this one on high accuracy indicators

Vixen:
While I was working as a research and development engineer, I learned all about metrology and metallurgy; the hard way. We did it to a budget; a rather generous budget.
Much of our work involved the destructive testing of materials under extreme conditions :hammerbash:
One of the test houses we used, had a sign on the wall, which read:
" We can smash it, we can bash it,
we can twist it, crash it, blast it,
batter it, shoot it, snap it, shake it,
squeeze it, squash it, rip it, stretch it,
freeze it, crack it, shatter it,
we can slice it, dice it and analyse it.
We can even blow it up."
And that is what we sometimes did :zap:
It's amazing how plastic a hunk of aluminium can become.... if you apply enough force :censored:

Which reminds me of the time that our Elf and Safety lot got on their high horses about "Thou shall contact our H&S department and get specific advice for any work offsite and not follow our customer's own H&S rules" ::)
So I emailed them back enquiring about could they advise me on the Heath and Safety requirements for my forth coming live firing trial with the UK MoD .... Their advice? Follow the customer's H&S requirements :lolb:
