What did you get for Christmas?
« on: December 26, 2022, 04:06:36 PM »
For Christmas this year, Santa brought me this cool little gadget!

It’s the slickest little deburring tool I’ve ever seen!  When you push the button on top the little triangle piece at the end turns sideways allowing you to insert the pointy end into a small hole.  Then you release the button, and the triangle piece flips back open.  Now you can deburr the backside of the hole!  It is super cool!

Anyway, I hope Santa was kind to each and every one of you this year and that you all had a wonderful and happy Christmas with your families.

So, what did you get for Christmas?

Three litres of Bombat Sapphire gin, a bar of Toblerone chocolate, a £50 clothes voucher and a woollen jumper!

Not a lot of shop stuff for Christmas here, I do have a column casting for a Stuart steam hammer on order, expecting that in the next couple weeks!

Yes luggage capacity/weight capability was a requirement as was ability to get out of muddy fields and the other challenges of country living that I have decided I am too old to want to have to think about anymore  :old:

If you think you might want it ... you may as well have it. We only live once

Jo we really need to know what the lathe and car are before anyone can decide if you got the presents that we all want.

I got  three ER16 collets in the common shank sizes to save me having to get the ones from the CNC (in other workshop)when I want to use them on the manual mill, new edge finder as the end of my previous one got crashed on the CNC and a couple of other odd ME related items. Still waiting for a Stuart cylinder casting to arrive.

I could claim it is a Saturday girl racer car, a best Sunday car and a working week car but you know I am retired so that is a fib   :embarassed:

Hi everybody,
after nearly one year thinking about it, Santa has made a final decision now.
My conventional mill, an Optimum BF20L, very similar to many other brands all over the world and finally made in China, is now 12 years old.
It is still working fine, but the electronics started to do it´s own things over the last 2 years.
It was not able anymore to keep the selected speed, as it should.
Doing an adjustment i.e. of 1.200 rev/min, does not means it will keep it over the entire duration of the milling process.
Suddenly, in the middle of an operation the revs dropped down to 800 or similar and some seconds later, or may not, it accelerated to the selected adjustment again.
So it was time to do something.
I have not been happy with the solution to swap to a big and heavy 3 Phases e-motor with frequency converter there.
So I was very happy to find a kit of a German supplier, who has adapted a 1,43 KW Kollmorgen servomotor weight 3,4 kg, which is able to run with 6.000 rev/min max.
A suitable servo amplifier is necessary also and some mechanical modification too.
A perfect, lets say industrial solution with an industrial price.
This price was the reason for me to that took some long time for the final decision.
At the end, now it is done.
If somebody is interested in more details, let me know please and I will start another post about the conversion of the mill.
Kind Regards
Achim

Kim,

Let us know how that deburring tool works. I've had it on my want list for years.

Among other things I got an Ott light. https://products.ottlite.com/c-180-wellness-series.aspx

Merry Christmas everyone!

Sorry to hear the commnet from AVTUR, ......." the failure of my right hip (long expected"

My THR [total hip replacement] was October 10th, and so 12 weeks is near painless, but still assisted by a walking stick

The most humorous part of the exercise was when my stolen [empty] urine flask slipping from my 4 wheel walker during a sharp U turn & rolling off the walker & bouncing down 8 stairs [1/2] of my staircase... thank goodness.....empty :toilet_claw:  & rinsed ...and plastic

I hope the good Australian wine is minimising the pain

 Derek .....:wine1:

I got myself an early Christmas present, I bought a new TIG welder about a month ago.  My previous TIG was strictly DC, and my new one is AC/DC.  So now I have the capability to weld aluminum, all I need to do is practice, practice, practice.

It's an Andeli 110/220V welder that has the circuitry built-in for "Cold" welding.  Cold welding isn't really cold, it just uses an extremely short duration welding pulse to avoid putting too much heat into the metal.  Cold welding is worthless for structural welding, but it looks like it'll be GREAT for sheet-metal.  I haven't had a chance to play with it yet, it's been a little cold outside, and I'm still trying to come up with a better method of hooking up the gas to this thing than the plastic tubing that they provided.

You all got some great Christmas gifts!  And some not as good ones, like Pete49's lump of coal or Derek's hip failure - very sorry to hear about that one :(

I got the Barbie version of a 3D printer    :smokin2:  :
That's a cute little guy!  You'll have to show us some of the things you print with it.  What's the print envelope?

Hi Kim, it's 100mm cubed, takes 1.75 mm filament, seems to run okay at 40mm/s, has a removable magnetic bed thingie,..... Lessee, what else...? I'm using Cura for a slicer with it since I run Linux. It only has 4 buttons, and no display, but you just put your G-code (Marlin type) on a little SD memory card, plug it in, hit start and it will run the latest date-stamped g-code program it finds on the card. It has buttons for feeding filament, withdrawing filament, and homing. Very simple to use.

It does come with proprietary Windows and Apple software, but as mentioned I haven't tried those since I run Cura/Linux. The first pieces I made were posted in my Small Flash Steam engine thread, but I think you've already seen those.

I got a late Christmas present 3 days ago. A compressor. A former colleague called me if I needed a compressor. I have to get him immediately, the house where he is in the basement is being demolished. The compressor is 30 years old but only has 1200 operating hours. It was a small hospital where he stood.
I disassembled it to be able to carry it better and then brought it to me.
I only took the large relays and the pressure switches from the electrical cabinet.
Next to my workshop is a room where it still fits in and everything is electrically connected again. The pressure vessel is also galvanized on the inside. So no rust!
Now I have compressed air in the workshop. 😀

That is a great addition to your shop!  Looks like you have air lines running around your shop too?  That is very nice!  I just have one rubber hose that I drag around to wherever I'm working.  Multiple air connections around the shop would be very nice!

How loud is the compressor?  Though maybe it doesn't matter if its in a different room?

Hello Kim,
the compressor is very quiet even without the soundproof housing.
And with the case very quiet.
I have a copper pipe over to the workshop and a reducing station there.
I think a manometer has to be installed there so that I can read the pressure in the boiler.

Due to the UK postal workers industrial dispute, one of my Christmas presents was delivered somewhat late, day before yesterday.

It was a laser cut, wooden model, loosely based on a 1929 Mercedes Benz SSK racer. It was nicely designed with laser cut plywood parts which press together and need no glue. It took all day to assemble and I think you will agree, makes into a nice little model.

Cheers

Tachometer for the lathe......  Needs a panel mount.

Works...but needs to be mounted properly first.   I'll be putting a magnet on the spindle thrust bearing nut.

I just installed mine a couple weeks ago, after finding the one I'd bought previously (and which sat on the bench for a very long time) was a frequency meter, not a tach! Worked great if you wanted to multiply by 60 all the time.  :ShakeHead: I ordered a new readout after and it's working fine now.
