Work Shop Practice series #17 Gears and Gear Cutting

https://www.amazon.com/Gears-Gear-Cutting-Workshop-Practice/dp/0852429118/ref=sr_1_3?crid=SFG8NGS535OS&keywords=gears+and+gear+cutting&qid=1671817858&sprefix=gears+and+gear+cutting%2Caps%2C81&sr=8-3

Seriously worth the $9 on Amazon...    And it has the plans for the Eureka Mechanism in it as well in case you want to make custom gear cutters....

Dave

Thanks Dave!

I understand the concept I just lack the equiptment. I tried it on the CNC but lack the horsepower to make the cut. I setup on the mill but the cheap R8 cutter holder I have is so out of concentricity that it seemed like only 2 teeth were making the cuts. I spent a few minutes making a R8 holder from scratch so the cutter now spins with no wobble. I have been waiting for the #3 cutter to come in and I will have both. Then my rotary table has a chuck mounted to it. I chucked a blank and gave it a spin. 0.007 runout so now i have to address that.

I decided to change gears and get the wheels figured out. I made the rims and decided to make the spokes out of hardwood. Went to the rack and found the collet I thought was a 3/8 square was actually a 5/16 so that is on hold now. I dont see much getting done before the holiday so now im looking at 3D printing these fenders. I scaled down the center section and will make a test print sometime soon.

Other than that its going good!

Got tired of waiting for involute cutters so I went down to the home depot and picked up some oak dowels.  Cut out 54 spokes but only needed 48. Still trying to decide if I'm going to paint the rim and spoke red or maybe just clear coat the spokes. After u figure that out I'll do it then epoxy everything together. Then the center can be machined flat and bored to accept the hub.

Nice looking wheels!  How did you cut all the spokes?

A really fascinating machine, yes, I do have the plan on my bench since years ago, but a single tooth cutter works very well too !
amazing gear box, superb!

I just posted 2 videos on YouTube. Step 1 was to cut the 1/2 inch diameter down to 1/4 and dress the end with a tapered tip so that last spoke can be put in on an angle and worked into place. First try they were way to tight. So I took a WAG and recut them 0.010 inches shorter. I scrapped the bottom edge with a razor blade to break the sharp corner and was able to work and tap the last spoke into place. They are nice and tight like a real wheel. Now I have to get them apart again to cement them together after I decide how I'm going to finish them.

Oh yeah! Once the cement sets up I still have to face the hub area from both sides to smooth out the surface and bring the hub to thickness. Then I will reapply what ever finish is used to that area.

Search for stevehuckss396 on YouTube and the video will pop up. I tried to post a link but something didn't seem right. I'll try again.

Well the glue has set on the spokes. I machined the center of the spoke circle to width and bored to accept the hubs. I now need to drill the holes to bolt the hubs on but it's time to eat, drink, and be merry.

Happy new year everyone!

Jo, Thank you for the edit!

It's a mid 70's Techumseh. 2 of my 3 cars have Tecumseh engines from the factory.

I'm taking a break from 3d printing for a while so I decided to take a look at the steering column. Pretty simple pieces so I was able to make a lot of parts reasonably fast.

Also thanks again to Don1966 for the spread sheets. I made a 36 pitch gear today that I couldn't buy. I will make the big gear tomorrow.
