Tailstock Die Holder for a Proxxon FD150
« on: November 20, 2022, 03:20:53 PM »

For some time I have thought about making a tailstock die holder for my Proxxon FD150. The tailstock taper is MT0 short which I think may be the same as Sherline and Cowells. MT0 short items are hard to find and tend to be expensive and probably more precise than I need.

I found a Proxxon tailstock chuck and adaptor for €12 so I thought I would give it a go. The chuck taper was B10 which I thought I could turn down to 8mm if the steel was not too hard.

I removed the tailstock quill from the Proxxon, tapped the chuck adaptor in place with a plastic mallet and mounted it in the lathe. Using a stainless-steel carbide insert I got a good fit and finish.

The body is made from a piece of 30mm scrap bin steel turned down to 28mm and cut to length with the bandsaw. This was faced to length and drilled and reamed 8mm. The two recesses for 16mm and 20mm dies were bored with a little fiddling at the start as my boring bar has a minimum size of 12mm.

I already have a 12mm to 20mm adaptor for my bigger tailstock die holder and thought it unlikely that I would want to use 25mm dies on the Proxxon.
Best regards

The clamping grub screw holders were drilled and tapped using the Proxxon drill, moving to the big
drill for the hole for the handle.

The handle is made from 6mm stainless steel, tapped M6 one end and radiused the other. It is retained with Loctite.

Seems to fit ok I will try it out on some injector bodies that are on the list to be made.
Best regards

Excellent! I wouldn't be without my double ended one. I didn't put a handle on mine: instead I knurled the whole thing to give me some hand grip, and drilled a hole through it to take a tommy bar if extra force was needed.

Great addon for your lathe!  Before I made one I could rarely get a straight thread, with the tailstock holder its easy.

You will get a lot of use from this.  I do with mine. I have a 9x20 HF lathe and a Unimat.  I use them for different things but putting a god thread on the end of a shaft is kind of universal so I made mine interchangeable.  Then I found out that they were so easy to make that I made several of them so I can leave the dies mounted so I don't have to fiddle with that chore.  They all have a 1/4" reamed bore that rides on a piece of tool steel which is held in thw tailstock chuck.  They started out as 5/8" bolts and I won't go into all of the details of bringing them to size, facing the head and boring the 13/16" recess for the die.  See attachments.

A very useful item, essential tools in fact, I also made one for each of my 2 lathes...

I also note the nice accessory for turning spheres on photo 31, and on this one, I don't have one ! I have to make one!

Roger, have plan printed and saved.

Got the arbor done for my little sherline and 4 blanks cut, but have been visiting my mum in Toronto for a bit. She’s doing fine, at 91 and with a new hip a year ago is now in a home; has great friends, walks, plays pool so well that she beat me every game we played. I think I’ll stick to machining, not pool playing…

Thanks for posting, it helped me get aff the chair and get started.

Slowly working on making 4 die holders. I'm doing other work (CNC) so while the machine is running, other tasks (such as typing this!) are getting done.

I went through my metric dies, from M1.4 to M4; I see for dimensions:
    12mm x 3mm
    16mm x 5mm
    20.6mm x 6.4mm
    25mm x 8.8mm
    25.4mm x 9.6mm

Sigh. Welcome to the way things are "over here".

The first 3 are well on the way; need to drill for screws and make handle(s)

:-)
