Good progress - shouln't be long before you have a working Crank and Conrod assembly - they already look good in their almost finished state

Do you know chaps, even though nothing is soldered/joined together yet, there is a more than even chance that I am getting somewhere!

Main Bearings

The supplied blanks machined to size.

Set up to slit the blanks having machined the long slots in the bodies. I just LUUVV my FB2 mill!

The two halves are different sizes: 5/16" and 3/8". In the interests of accuracy I slit them in that sequence, retaining the pairs. They are slightly oversize so that I can size them accurately later. I used a much finer toothed slitting saw to start with, but it had an argument with a projecting parallel...!

More on Big Ends

Much to my surprise and amazement, I have a piston/bigend/crank assembly that lines up perfectly with minimal clearances!
Some fine adjustment will be needed later...
It looks nice from a distance :whoohoo: :pinkelephant: :cartwheel:

A few pics.

Preparing the conrods for silver soldering. Cleaning with thinners and applying the silver solder paste.

Untouched by human hands! I've since given them a brush with the Dremel but that is all. I'm minded to keep the blued finish.

Ta Dah!!!

Trouble is, members will remember I made a serious mistake earlier with the bed plate: both of those cranks are too far to the right, so it looks like I will have to buy another bedplate!

Making a Fixture for Boring the Main Bearings
I tried boring these without a fixture as I was too idle to make one. Unfortunately, this didn't go well... 😱
I've made the fixture but have yet to bore the bearings using it. Here's a few pics.

Here's the fixture, designed to be used in a four jaw chuck. However, as usual, I took the easier route and made a single piece fixture which could be held tightly in the milling vice.

Done!

Small bolster glued on to level things up when drilling.

Held in the vice against the end stop, ready for action tomorrow.

No way it can be corrected ?

I must admit that I don't remember the material - if Aluminium, then my first idea is out the window (soldering material back on) - but maybe a screw (or two) + JB Weld  :noidea:

Best wishes

Flywheel Choices. Bland or Bling?

The supplied lump of cast iron or my shiny brass creation? I know which one I prefer!

The iron one is better.

Iron for me but I expect the brass one will go better with the rest of the bling 8)
