Let's Build the Wallaby - 30cc Twin Cylinder 4-Stroke Engine
« on: October 29, 2022, 03:38:54 PM »
This engine build will be a derivative of Edgar Westbury's Wallaby, first designed for a model train, then updated for use in a model hydroplane. The engine is an overhead valve, water cooled, 30cc, inline twin cylinder 4-stroke. My version will use no castings and will be machined from bar stock on the mill, lathe and a home made CNC router.

I am a huge fan of Edgar Westbury's work. He was very prolific producing designs optimized for construction by the home machinist with minimal tools, typically a small lathe and a drilling machine. His first engine design was published in the 1920's, a single cylinder 2-stroke for a 13 foot wing span model airplane. He joined Model Engineer magazine in the early 1930's and went on to publish many wonderful engine construction articles as well as several books on machining.

This build log will be documented as a video series and the plans can be found on my website if you want to build one too.

It is nice to see your build Eccentric but I have removed your link to your personal funding site because MEM is not a commercial site.

The Admins fund MEM out of our own pockets and would never consider asking the members to fund it  :hellno: as part of this we require that members do not use it as a "funding" opportunity.

Edgar Westbury was the civilian head of the workshop training school at RAF Cranwell in the late 1920s and early 1930. During this period Cranwell trained RAF apprentices as well as officers. No person could do what Westbury did without serious assistance. In the late 1920s he was encouraged to use students by the then commanding officer at Cranwell who made large flying model aircraft.

Here is the next video in the Wallaby build series. These initial videos are building skills that will be used throughout the build.  This one covers lathe work focusing on a simple custom form tool to create an inside radius for a cosmetic washer.

This is the Wallaby engine display base we are building first to challenge ourselves with some simple lathe and mill work.
