Hi,

I'm a 70 year old, mostly retired (I do some consulting to buy toys),  chemist who fell in love with machining waaaaaaay back in college when I made scientific apparatus for the lab work.   I have a Bridgeport mill, Rockwell/Delta 11" lathe, antique 24" shaper, die filer, and am rebuilding a Covel surface grinder.   

I'm here to learn.

Yup.   When BR left HSM it triggered my asking about other forums,  and so here I am.   Not that I plan to leave HSM,  but I thought I'd expand my horizons.

Good choice.  Sadly, HSM has become more contentious and OT than ever; I still read it but seldom contribute.  The atmosphere here is far more friendly and helpful.

It is a shame - I started out over there too, but eventually saw fewer builds, more arguments, lots of nonsense. Much happier here!

I'm still there and contribute there more than here. That's where I started too.
I agree lots of OT stuff. This forum and HMEM are model centric.
Personally, I think Brian got a little thin skinned when anybody asked or suggested anything that was not what he already had planned or was in agreement with his methods. He took his ball and when home. Oh well.

Hello fellow HSM members...

I feel a little out of place here because I am more interested in learning how to be a better machinist than in making model engines.   That's not to say I wouldn't love to build a Watt's beam engine,  but then I'd have to build a boiler (and that's not easy).  Once it was all done would get run once or twice and then get put on a shelf.   

If anything I'd build a Newcomen atmospheric engine ...   all the visual of a beam engine and no requirement for a high pressure boiler. 

So,  which are the best sections for basic machining stuff?

Both simple and challenging machining stuff can be found under the engines sections where people tackle the challenge of building their model engines. Holding castings in such a way that you can actually machine the bit you need to machine is fun  Others will tell you that machining bits from solid will test your machining abilities.
