Just a note for anyone who was intending to spend their pocket money with Machine-DRO. They won't now be attending but there are some discount codes so you can still save some money see this thread on ME https://www.model-engineer.co.uk/forums/postings.asp?th=183645&p=1#PostTop

I'm unlikely to go this year, few bits going on work wise and there is not really anything I need to buy, hopefully those going won't forget to take some pictures :stickpoke:

looks like Noel's free drill sharpening offer will also be off. So no need to lug those 2" MT drill bits to the show :LittleDevil:

It is very sad  to hear that Noel's car has failed and that he cannot get to the show  :( .

I am sure Noel is feeling very disappointed that he cannot provide the sharpening display he promised at the show and I cannot see him looking forward to the hassle or cost of the repair/replacement of his car :stickpoke:

Visited the show today, very disappointing, not the show it used to be, the number of exhibitor’s was much smaller, although the show seemed to be well attended, the usual scrum around the material sellers. I shall not go next year.

I went this morning. The numbers, visitors, suppliers and models, were down. There some very good models. It was nice to see Vixen’s two Pegasuses (Pegasi?) and Seal(?).

Totally agree Jo !  Was hoping to see some nice pictures that would make me drool.

Was planning to go myself, until a family medical problem meant I have spent the last four weeks driving to and from Sussex (I know the road just a tad too well now) and am just too tired to make the effort from Somerset.

Hopefully, there will be a next year..........

Enjoyed looking through the photos Andy, many thanks for posting them.  Very high quality and good variety of the models that were there, somewhat countered the disappointment of reading of the general contraction of the show, though that was apparent also in the glimpses of the overall layout.  Dave

I have had a really bad time over the last weeks after catching the Covid Bug at the end of August. Today was almost the first time out since then. I found the strength to visit the Midlands Model Engineering Exhibition to see what all the fuss was about. I came home exhausted but it was well worth the trip.

To add to Andy's excellent photo record of the show, here are some photos of three exhibits that really excited me. The first set are of a Fowler Superba compound Ploughing Engine and a complete set of ploughing implements ( tackle ) What made this model so special to me, was that it was made entirely from exotic hardwoods. I still cannot believe that it was only awarded a " Very Highly Commended" award. It deserved better.

Here is the six furrow anti balance plough

Here is the Cultivator

The Mole Drainage Plough

The Ground Breaker Roller

And the Living Van, 'Home from home' for six months of the year

Another engine which appealed to me was this Showman's Engine, build by a gentleman named Davinder. No prizes for guessing which part of the world he was born. Awarded 'First in Class'

The BSA Goldstar has already attracted a lot of attention. Here is the builder apparently about to climb on board. Just look at the fine detail. The spokes are 1mm diameter velodrome racing bike spokes and the wheel rims are correctly dimpled to accept each spoke The engine was machined from solid, no casting used anywhere. It was also awarded 'First in Class'.

And finally, please allow me a self indulgence.
My two 1/4 scale Bristol Mercury engine and some silverware.
'First in Class' as well as the new 'Chris Deith Memorial Trophy' for 'Best in Show'.

Certainly helped me feel a little better

Mike

Thanks for the pictures. I wish we had more events like that here in the US. One thing caught my eye, the Garratt William Francis model. I actually started one of these in 3/4" scale. Would you know anything about the model in your photos?
I have been using this one for inspiration, it is in 5" gauge:

Agreed. The Goldstar was quite exceptional in the flesh. In the right photographic setting it would be taken for the real thing!

Mike's workmanship is always top quality and good to look at.

I left the show yesterday clutching a big box full of Stuart Triple Expansion Engine castings. Watch out for (yet another) new build thread... :LittleAngel:

Hope all goes well with the reworked 'Le Craig' rotary engine. You must be approaching the first test soon?
