USS Ohio BB12 Engine and auxiliaries.
« on: September 18, 2022, 06:11:12 PM »
Chris and others have expressed interest in me providing scans of the original drawings from the book that featured one of the engines from the USS 0hio  BB12.     Chris's friend was kind enough to scan the prints in PDF format.   They are LARGE!   I've gone round and round on how to provide these to the group without some long term burdens.    The safest thing to do I think is to resize these scans to the maximum allowable attachment size of a post, and post them 1 post at a time under this header.   That way they stay with the forum, and don't start costing me money for online storage.

I think reducing the resolution will have no serious affects on the prints, but I will check before I do it.

They are fascinating, and I am sure the group will want to look at them.

Give me some time.....Came down with a spot of something or other, though the covid test says it's not that...it sure is wierd....

I'm no expert on this stuff but wouldn't it make sense to explore the option of uploading these huge files to some dropbox or cloud structure and allow interested forum members to download from there ?

Perhaps publish some downsized appetizers on the forum to give folks an idea of what the full blown images look like ?

Another option would be to crop each sheet into a series of rectangles around each subimage, and post those images?

EDIT: Dave, Just tried that, and have sent you the link to the cropped files...  They are all Tiff files, not PDF, so easy to edit the images.

I'd like to do that, but I do remember photosuckit .....and I'm leary of going that route.   Additionally, being sponsored here forces people to be members here.  I like that....I also want to watermark them so I don't end up seeing them on Ebay some day....

Additionally, they are over 16M each currently...on a line drawing.    I think the resolution will be fine at 8M, but I'll prove it out first

Chris I got the stack of cards.    PIA in my opinion to review the drawing that way and to put them back together...

You be the judge

one at 16.3M resolution
The next one at 7.3M resolution

Same section of the same drawing

When I took the snips above, I tried hard to get the magnification the same....but they look pretty much identical to me.

Crap and double drat    I read the limit at 10M....not 1M    Back to the drawing board...

Could the admins grant exemptions to the size limit for special posts?  Just curious if that's even possible.

The cut up ones are under the limit, so will do in a pinch.

Check what colorspace the images are in. If RGB, thats bigger, changing to greyscale will help .

Numbers are totally blurred out from the downscaling.

I was able to get the big page to less than 1 meg - scaled down 50%, changed the Tiff encoding to the FAX setting. Sample attached.

Hah! Looks like it attached okay, but my browser wont show it as a thumbnail, cant handle the pixel dimensions. However, clicking on the name underneath to download the file and viewing it on my PC does work.
