Hello from Stoney Stanton.
« on: August 29, 2022, 11:11:30 PM »
Hi all,

Not sure I qualify as a model maker, the engine I'm building is going in a motorbike. (Eventually!).  Single cylinder sleeve valve I/C based on an original Bristol Hercules cylinder and sleeve.

I saw a thread about valve timing which was helpful, and this looks like a forum with some good content and advice from around the world! So thanks in advance 😁

My project is being posted on YouTube if anyone is interested.

Hello Mark, Welcome to the forum.

A single cylinder from a Bristol Hercules in a bike. Wow!!!!!  :praise2:

In a way your project is going full circle, in as much as the Bristol sleeve valve engines were inspired by the Barr and Stroud single cylinder motorbike engine.

Cheers

Mike

Thanks Guys,

This forum responds quickly!

You're right Mike, there's (apparently) the actual Bar and Stroud motorcycle that inspired Sir Roy Fedden in the first place at the Bristol museum. When I'm finished I plan to ride down and see if I can get the two bikes together for a photo.  :)

The guys who restored a complete Hercules from Maddison 4x4 have been helpful with small parts, along with the RAF reserve collection.

I keep meaning to contact the Rolls Royce team who recently refurbished a cutaway Hercules for display, they might be interested (and able to help). It's a case of waiting until I have just finished the next part before I do, and then I might as well finish the next part... and so on.

Nice to meet you anwyay.

Hello Mark

Is that the Stoney Stanton in Leicestershire UK, just off the Fosse Way (that's an ancient, cross country, Roman road; straight as a die)

Cheers

Mike

Yes Mike,

That's exactly the place. I ride to work down the Fosse way every day.

If you're ever passing by you're welcome to drop in - same for anyone else with an interest.

Mark.

Hello Mark,

That's one offer I would not want to refuse I may be on the other end of the Fosse in October.

Cheers

Mark

Welcome from another who lives on, or close to, the Fosse, 125 miles south west of you.

As I understand you, you have bits of a Hercules engine. You are going to have fun!

PM will follow.
