The sligtly different feed pump.
« on: August 19, 2022, 11:37:02 AM »
Hello folks,

I needed a feed pump for the Stuart 5A. I also know that Stuart makes the correct pump as a cast kit.
But I couldn't get a set of cast parts at the time and wanted to build a pump myself. In old books there was a drawing for a pump for original steam engines of all kinds. What I didn't know now was the diameter of the piston and I decided on 12 mm. Maybe a little too big. The housing was to be built as a >cast part<. A mix of hard and soft soldered brass parts. The drawing served as a free template, without sticking to the dimensions.

The housing is made of brass and since the pump should last forever, the piston slides in a bronze bushing that has been pressed into the housing. The stuffing box also has a bronze bushing. The piston is made of stainless steel.

Thanks Ron and David,

The valves are normal stainless steel balls. So that they don't take off so high, there is a basket above it with a screw for limiting the travel. The balls sit on interchangeable bronze bushings. Both valves are so equipped.
Above that is the air bubble. I don't know what it's called in English now. In Germany it is called " Windkessel ". ( air chamber )
Finally, everything is painted and attached to the machine.

Well made and beautiful result  :praise2:

I was going to ask if this is a 'Result off the New Workshop' - but the last picture made me think that  this is another build from before you joined here ....  :noidea:

Hello Per,

you saw that correctly. The construction is not current.
already a few years old. But I found the pictures on the computer yesterday and wanted to show them. I think I've shown them before in the German Steam Model Forum. I still have some construction reports from the past few days.
The pump is still doing a good job.

The workshop is finished and ready for new deeds. But there is still a lot to do on the house and farm.
I think autumn is the time for steam engines again.
