Feeble excuse. What you actually mean is it will cost you £20 more to get there and back than it did last time you visited  :stickpoke: As you have not been for a few years you are still in pocket, with cash to spare  ::)

Show Update:

Mike Coles set off for the show 11am this morning and should be arriving about now. My car is packed ready to go first thing. Amongst the collection of engines I am taking the Clarkson (its not a ) Steeple engine along with me if anyone would like to see it or discuss anything :)

Look forward to seeing some of you over the weekend, if you don't come Mike Coles will have to force himself to eat all of the Sticky wot-its

Weather is looking good for the weekend not too hot and only a slight chance of a shower later on today.

Camera is in the bag so I will try to get some piccies  :) I'll be off in about an hour to make sure I get my 'spot'.   :whoohoo:

Just got back, have not yet unpacked anything.  The only thing I acquired today was a little casting which has already been nabbed  :pinkelephant:

What can I say the show is getting smaller  :( I have a few photo's to share after I recover, have my dinner and possibly watch qualifying  :slap: Or in the morning if I fall asleep  :-[  :old:

That is a very rare casting  it is a Kittywake head  ;D

Early yesterday morning I arrived at the show ground to find a gazabo next to our monkey cage. The monkey cage is a clear recognition it is our site  ;) Not having any table cloths  I set up my table:

The collection of models carefully chosen so that I could tell the tale of how Stuarts matured their vertical steam engine design and explain the different types of aero engines:

And supplemented them with some other more interesting engines:

Half an hour later Mike Coles arrived with his running stand and started by securely anchoring it to the ground:

Mike remembered his table cloths  :-[

These are all running engine so the table cloths show their use  ::) As Mike set his up Mike Tull arrived with some of the contents of the Vixen's Den:

I am not very good at taking photographs of our engines and Mike Coles only brought his running engines. Mike Tull brought a few of the bits he has been making for his engines:

And then they started playing  ::)

Slowly two other stands set themselves up with their models.

Keith from the Worthing club set up next to us with his collection of IC engines. The first of his is a desirable Stuart 800:

A Stuart 1/4 horse:

Westburys Centuar:

A nice little RLE:

And A Robinson Chippie engine:

Around this point the public started to arrive but not many  :headscratch: One MEM member sneaked into see what was going on but he was not displaying anything  :stickpoke: Enquiries about the visitor numbers got the response that they were playing cricket on the field where everyone normally parks so a number of people were not bothering  :toilet_claw:.

The final table was of a collection of "as found" model engines. The owner had taken to purchasing old model boats at auctions and extracting the engines from them as he had found this was a cheaper mans of acquiring the engines than buying individual engines.

A Taplin twin:

Terry Aspin engine:

A Kiwi

It is always a difficult choice as to what is better: clean up the engine or leave it with its original patina  :noidea:

As rather empty trains went round the outside of the gala:

Traction engines were running around inside:

And a couple were available for sale:

There were two boating lakes, the first was for the kiddies

The second for the models:

Which were displayed in their own gazebos:

There was the usual display of locomotives and this one slightly different one:

I was left somewhat disappointed with it. Talking to one trader on the first day he took less than £100. He said that the Midlands show was asking him for £1200 for one of the little cubicle stands at the show, so there is no way he can justify attending.

Thanks for the photos Jo and good to catch up with you and the two Mikes at the show.

Yes you would certainly have to sell a lot to cover that stand cost plus fuel and accommodation.

At the beginning of this thread Dave outlined the finances of attending a show. The Guildford show is free to get in (lets not talk about the parking problems  :ShakeHead: Normally they have it sorted) but is lacking what it used to be. The Midlands show is later this year and for me is a 200 mile tiring drive, irrespective of displaying or not, you are then charged to get in. Over the years the number of traders have been reducing there and no doubt due to the cost of displaying models, the number of exhibits have also been reducing.  But Mike Coles is planning to exhibit at the Midlands show but he will not be running due to safety restrictions  :disappointed:

Jo has given an excellent overview of the Guildford Show. Sadly the engines on display almost outnumbered the visitors.

Here are some of the engines on display in the MEM Gazebo.

I will start with Mike Cole's collection of running engines.

ABC Scorpion

Chennery V Twin

Laser RC engine converted to sparks and petrol

Gnome Mono    always a good runner

Anzani  was reluctant to run all of Saturday

Bentley BR1   never fails to run beautifully.

Here are a selection of Jo's varied engine display

Some of the Stuart family

And my two favourites

The Bolton and Watt

The Easton and Anderson.

Jo

The other Mike  AKA Vixen also brought along some of his engines, some complete and some still work in progress

Bristol Mercury MK VIII

More parts made for the Mercedes Benz W165 engines

Westbury Seal

Bristol Jupiter magneto test rig.

Hope you enjoy these as much as we did

Thanks, Jo, for featuring the excellent photo coverage of the show as it now manifests itself. Among the items exhibited are examples of what must be some of the finest model engineering being done anywhere in the world at the present time.  When one remembers the Guildford shows going way back, and the massive interest and quantity of visitors and trade support that was manifested, it does seem a bit hard to credit the change that has been wrought, but I hope that those who attended enjoyed themselves.  Dave

Thanks, so much Jo and Mike for your wonderful pictures.

As all have said, it is a pity that attendance is down, but I suspect Covid is making some people cautious of crowds.  But it makes it hard on the organisers to make the logistics and finances work out.

I hope at least that those who attended and made the effort to display their engines found it a satisfying day with more opportunity to catch up with each other.

Jo, Mike, I would like to thank-you both for supplying some excellent photos of some extremely fine engines. WOW!! Wish I could hasve been there, but alas, getting across the pond would have made the trip far to pricey for my tight arse to fathom.  :embarassed:  Several years ago there were several shows around in the area, but as the memberships of those clubs has dwindled, the shows are almost non-existent anymore, and when they do appear, it is the same old collection of models that, don't get me wrong. are beautiful, but new presentations would sure be a blessing. The youth of today do not seem to find this hobby as entertaining as modern video games or they feel the rewards are just to time consuming for them to champion through. Its the instant gratification thing rearing its ugly head I suppose. Anyway,, once again, THANK-YOU for sharing your outing with us.  :wine1:

Really top notch work...

With this never-ending pandemic, many people have changed their interests and no longer go to their usual meetings.
last fall, the audience was so small that our modest steam train rally, a crowded week-end usually, turned into a club meeting.

You said something about showing the evolution of Stuart verticals, maybe you could do a quick write up on them here? Bob

Sidney Marmaduke Stuart Turner, was generally known by his second middle name 'Stuart' over his years he tried his hand at many things but he eventually arrived at Shiplake, near Henley-on-Thames and got the job of looking after the steam generating plant at Shiplake Court. While at Shiplake Court, Stuart Turner designed the first of a long series of model steam engines now known as the Stuart No. 1 Engine.

This was the very first Stuart design and it has been made with very few modifications, ever since 1901, featuring in every single catalogue ever since. It is considered to be a very fine engine with beautiful lines and has the advantage of being not too difficult to build. The Single standard holding the cylinder above the crankshaft is quick to machine and can be made on a relatively small lathe. The completed engine running at 1000rpm could generate 1/4 HP so was more than adequate to drive the constructor's lathe if required.

But, there is always a but... this engine is designed to run in only one direction with the crankshaft turning and connecting rod pushing away from the standard on the downstroke. With the crankshaft running in the correct direction the crosshead is pushed into the standard bearing surface and pulled into it on the up stroke. Running the engine in reverse apples force to the crosshead guides that are not designed for full support.

ST recognised the need for a reversing engine and introduced the No 5, which had the same bore and stroke as the No 1 but with options for a slip eccentric or Stephenson's reversing gear to change the engines running direction.

Surus's size Naughty engine is similar to the original Stuart 5 as it has two standards:

My intention is to build this engine with slip eccentrics so that I have at least one example in my collection. Slip eccentrics are simpler to manufacture than reversing gear but require the engine to be stopped to reposition the eccentric strap - possibly not a problem if running a lathe.

But (another but  ::) ) a pair of standards can be a real devil to machine and set up with the correct running gaps on both standards and many attempts can be found on these early engines where the builders could not get the tolerances quiet right  :disappointed: Then someone came up with an alternative arrangement replacing the standards with an A frame shape that could have the cross head surface turned on a lathe.

The No 5 proved to be a good engine for boats but lacked a bit on the power front so when the time came to update the design with the A frame ST also increased the Bore diameter by 1/4".  Hence we have the Stuart 5A (all Stuart designs with these A frames have a letter A in their designation).

On this 5A you can see the "posh" reversing gear the Stephenson's reversing gear . The engine can be reversed while still running using the lever. It also has the advantage that you can "notch it back" which means reducing the movement of the valve so that steam is let into the cylinder for less time.  The result is that the engine uses steam more efficiently. On Steam Locomotives there are notches on the reversing lever into which a peg drops to hold the lever in position, the Stuart reversing gear does not have the notches  ::)

This proved to be a successful boat design so much that in 1976 they introduced a double engine version - the Swan:

With the Swan design was a complicated condenser design which utilised car parts  :facepalm2: available in the mid 1970's. This engine does not sport those as I thought they looked horrible. And, No I wasn't going to lift the Swan outside to photograph it  :hellno:

That's some very interesting background information. We need more background stories like it. They add so much to the whole Stuart Turner story and name.

Jo, thanks for the detailed history of Stuart steam engines. I just think this series of machines is classically beautiful! I built the number 1, 10, and 5 A myself. I'm still missing number 7.
A set of materials is currently on offer on ebay for around €350. Maybe I should grab it?
At my first exhibition with Stuart's number 1, an old ship's engineer immediately pointed out to me that there was only one preferred direction of rotation with a half A stand. With ship steam engines of this type, the ship's propeller should fit the machine for forward travel.

Thanks for the pictures and greetings Michael

The various Stuart 'small power' engines are very interesting  :)  Where did the boilers come from? In Henry Greenly's book he describes a flash steam boiler for a workshop power system. What did other people use for workshops, boats, etc?
Best regards

Roger

Like the engines stuartturnersteam has some details and history of some of  the various boilers that have been available over time. The "kit boilers" are likely to have been used to drive workshop engine.

Hi Jo, thanks for that little history.

I have on my shelf a Stewart No 1 (I assume from your description) inherited from an uncle who possibly bought the set of machined parts.  It has an “S” cast in the steam chest cover.  It was in the garage cupboard at Grand parents house as long as I can remember, late fifties perhaps, and not young then.

It runs well and I still have the original boiler, with its wrapped copper barrel and ends screwed in with little brass screws.  I have steamed it, many years ago, but not now.  Not as nicely painted as your example!

Your post has helped me understand some of the differences in the various models.

I don't think that is a No 1. The flywheel, conrod and eccentric strap/rod look more like they belong on one of the smaller engines. What is the flywheel diameter and stroke?

Looks more like an early No10

One of our larger model engineering shows, NAMES, has been down for 3 years. My son and I attended the Cabin Fever show back in January.  Attendance by both builders and spectators was down from previous years but it was nice to get out and see some old friends since the peak of the Covid epidemic. I know cost is a big factor.  For my son and I to travel, meals and lodging came out to about $450.00 U.S. A lot of the spectators don't realize that I have to pay to put on a show for them.
As the machinist,  mechanical fraternity is aging and new young people are not filling in the ranks I suspect that a lot of the shows will cease to exist. Today the young people are into 3D printing.  For a reasonable cost, $2-4 hundred dollars you can get into the hobby as compared with setting up a reasonable machine shop for thousands not to mention the lack of mechanical arts traing these days.
Thanks Jo for the pictures and history of ST.

I totally agree with you George. One of our team Mike Coles is planning to go to the Midlands show later this year and it is going to be expensive for him: paying for the fuel for Travel, paying for the campsite, paying for meals away from home and if that is not enough they will be charging him £11 a day (4 days = £44)  to man the stand with his engines on  AS a young man in his eighties Mike will be knackered very tired by the end of it  :-[

I see Guildford as a get together of friends and costs me about £10 total which is ok. As for the Midlands show that will cost me £50  :o to go and sit down for a cuppa with friends.

Hi Jason, thanks for helping out there.  If is is not obvious to you, it is no wonder I am confused.  The history is more complex than I had imagined.

The flywheel is 3” almost exactly, with 6 spokes, 0.55” wide.

Stroke is 18 mm or 0.71”.  Eccentric strap appears to be machined from a casting based on small un-machined areas.

I don’t mean to hijack the post, but it appeared to go with the history when I asked the question.

Thanks

Yes it is an early no 10V:

A Highly desirable little engine  :) They were only around for 9 years before this engine also moved over to have an A frame in 1933.

Really it's a vertical No10 it only became a 10V some time after they went for the A frame/trunk guide. Produced for at least 12 years http://stuartturnersteam.com/Vertical/10V/10V.html

They most likely added the V to save confusion between the vertical and horizontal as both were originally just sold as No10s http://stuartturnersteam.com/Horizon/10H/10H.html

Hi
The early catalog from a local dealer had a picture of stuart turner no 10  with a turned trunk guide    but the 5a with separate castings for each side similar to the no 1  .

it looks like you had a good display its pity not big crowds.

Hi Jason, you wasted most of my afternoon perusing that link - fascinating, thank you.

Thanks, Jo, that one really is an early one.

Based on that and on the information on the site from Jason’s link, mine looks like perhaps nearer 1933 than yours, still not all the 10V features but including some, like the eccentric strap and the steam chest cover and inlet location.  Amazing the little things that are only seen in a quest like this.

Thank you both.

Thanks for the photos, Mike and Jo.  Wish I could take in a show, maybe one of these days...I've been travelling the world lately, mostly for work.
