Some my question about forum !

I'm new, I'm learning how the forum works
I have two questions - hopefully this is the right place for questions
  To become a member of the forum Are there any criteria ?
  The reason I ask is because a few years ago, I registered to the forum but both times it was rejected and then banned from the forum.
  I registered was the help of Roger .
   When I look at the bottom of the homepage there is a section I find strange
  " Bad Behavior has blocked 13082 access attempts in the last 7 days."
  What is bad behavior ?

The criteria to become a member of the forum is that you would like to join  and we hope you not only like model engines but you also build model engines and ideally want to share your builds  .

Sadly there are a few internet IP address domain where we get huge numbers of spam/site attacks from and we have suffered in the past from an unmanageable number of simultaneous attempts to bring down the forum. These attacks happened again and again and cause a lot of work.  Our answer to this was to ban the source entire domain address to cut off that section of the internet to prevent our site being overwhelmed, this resulted in the ban of the entire Chinese IP domain addresses  . Yes it was very heavy handed but it immediately stopped all of the attacks and the site as not been taken down since

The Forum software has built into it a "spam" blocker called "bad behaviour" that is regularly updated with various  IP addresses. The count shows just how often bad people try to attack our forum  and blocks them, which means the moderators do not have to firefight which can be a lot of work 


You may have noticed that this forum is provided free of charge without any adverts. This is because it is privately funded by fellow model engine making enthusiasts - the Administrators, and is managed day to day by the good will of volunteers who hold the role of moderators. When we get infected by a virus or overrun by offensive posting it takes a lot of work by both the administrators and moderators. Sadly as a result of the action of these internet "scum" innocent bystanders sometimes suffer in the wake of us trying to prevent their bad actions and that will also mean some good people are prevented from joining because of the necessity of blocking the "scum"

Yes indeed, moderating / administering a forum is a thankless job and takes a lot of behind the scenes work that people don't even realize is happening. I did it before for a few years on a motorcycle forum - so thank you mods, admin and sponsors, very much. I have looked around extensively and I really do believe this to be the best model engineering forum around.

It truly is a hard decision to make. One that can affect a well intentioned, potential new member. However, those are the results of having no other means to access the outside world via the internet. I have had my share of encounters with hackers and domains that have no good intentions when it comes to invading and often times wrecking havoc upon all they come in contact with. I have fought back and won several of those attacks but as Jo stated, it takes a LOT of work and you have to think quick. The best for all is to simply block those sites and move on. Well done Jo, and all the other admins for taking the due diligence of keeping this forum running smoothly for the entertainment of us all.    Please, keep up the terrific work and we will all benefit from it. THANK-YOU!!
