generator for steam engine
« on: April 10, 2022, 03:41:01 PM »
Hello,

a dynamo driven by a leather belt must be able to be tensioned. I built a device for it. Made of brass. Partially soldered with silver solder and tin solder. But also glued and screwed. I once saw it on a large machine system. The dynamo was built some time ago and just repainted. It comes from parts of an old fan motor from the Opel Kadett car. The anchor has been rewound and re-stored.

now the rails are painted with zinc primer and are going to be black.
The dynamo can get used to its new place.

Those are very nice adjusters!  Very similar to tail pulley conveyor belt adjusters.  Since you made two of them you should also be able to adjust the belt travel position on the generator pulley.  Also, that's a very nice generator.  It's difficult to source electric motors that look old enough to sit next to a steam engine.

the generator is only trimmed to look old.
From the old engine only the round part remained where the magnet is.
There were 19 wraps of thick wire.
And now 90 wraps of 0.35mm wire. Since the old bearing of the shaft was no longer usable, I built new bearings. With ball bearing.
When operated with the Stuart 5a, an HO locomotive could run.

Hello,

the generator is mounted. But the belt slips over the smooth little pulley. An idler pulley had to be installed.
The lamp is also ready. The shade made of copper and the rest of brass. A press sleeve 1/2 inch did a good job.
I don't know if I'll paint the lamp or leave it like that. Next comes the electrical installation.

Wow, Michael!  That's really beautiful!  I love the lamp.  It looks great!
So you just pounded the copper into shape for the lamp shade?

Hello Kim,

Yes, the lampshade was beaten with a ball-peen hammer and a pad of lead. The copper plate has to be heated several times.
I want to install an E 10 socket there.

Hello, now the generator is electrically connected to the lamp. A voltage indicator is also mounted. First test with compressed air.

That is very cool!  The engine runs so slow and even and it still is able to generate electricity to power the lamp!  Beautiful display!

The steam engine probably turns so well because I didn't build it myself 😄. The eccentric is firmly attached to the crankshaft. You can't adjust much there.
But she got a new piston and piston rings from me and the cylinder was honed. In the test, the pressure was about one bar.
