I'll introduce myself
« on: March 16, 2022, 02:13:30 PM »
Hello everyone,

Before I read along here I would like to introduce you. My name is Michael and I come from Germany from the city of Magdeburg. That is between Hanover and Berlin.
I have been building model steam engines for over 20 years. From Stuart I built the number 1, the 10H, the Beam and a number 5a.
My largest model is the "R.Wolf Number 1". The first locomotive from Magdeburg built by R. Wolf in 1862. The original is in the Deutsches Museum in Munich.
I was made aware of this MEM by a youtube comment. I hope I can learn a lot here.

Greetings Michael

( I hope you can understand well what I write with the help of google translation)

Hi Michael, and welcome to MEM!

That is an amazing model!  I had to look up the prototype since I wasn't familiar with it.  And wow!  you have really captured the likeness in your model!  It looks amazing!  Lovely work.  I'd love to see more pictures of it and your other work.  You certainly have a lot of skill!

 :hi: Michael,

Love your model of the Wolf Portable engine. How big is it? (The Stuart no 5A isn't small  ::) )

Hello everyone for the kind welcome,

The model is built on a scale of 1:5 and weighs around 60 kg.
It was built from a set of cast parts that was available here in Germany 20 years ago in a small series. I've been building on it for almost 9 years. but with interruptions. During a visit to the museum in Munich, I took many photos and this resulted in more details on the model. Despite some difficulties, building the model was a lot of fun.

Thanks for the additional pictures, Michael!

That is a LOT of little nuts around the end of the boiler!  :o

And I love the wood power takeoff pully!  That is super cool looking

Looking forward to the build thread!

Hello Kim,

yes, around 50 nuts in M 5 (5 mm screws). The inner boiler is bolted to the outer boiler tube.
That was the specialty of the Wolf company. As a result, the boilers could be checked and cleaned well during the inspection. All boilers were built like this. Regardless of whether the machine had 4 HP or 800 HP.

Hello everyone,

I wanted to say something about myself. built in 1968 and by profession I am a technician for measurement and control technology. I'm going to work in a ventilation and air conditioning company.
I am also interested in the large portable steam engine and there is a machine built in 1923 in the garage. Also by R. Wolf. But no longer under steam.
I also have an old tractor that I rebuilt from 1961.
It never gets boring.

I've set up a room in my house for my model steam engines. Everything is now in one room. And my great-grandfather's old desk has also found a nice place.

There's even room for future engines.

What an absolutely magnificent collection; it shows all the hours of dedication you must have put in building and restoring all those engines.

I bet each one has its own story to tell!  :)
