Hemingway Knurling Tool
« on: March 15, 2022, 07:36:41 PM »
Hello, I thought some of the members might be interested in my little tooling project I decided to build, a new knurling tool Hemingway Kit from the UK,
As mentioned in my new members post, it has been around 25years since I turned on a lathe or mill, so this has been a real learning curve, amazing how the basic stuff you learned comes back to you,  :)
I am happy to take advise as this is a learning curve for myself, please excuse some of my agricultural methods, like the 230mm precision angle grinder !I intend to purchase a bandsaw at some stage before retirement.
I made a little jig to hold the arms, (I seen this idea on another site,) I will use a new rotary table so that will be a first for myself also,
Thanks
Gary

Nice work. By all accounts the Hemingway tool is a very nice knurling tool - I've thought about making one also (another project on the list).

I am jealous of your anvil. I want to have a try at some home blacksmithing.

Thanks Stuart, I have had the Anvil for about 28years now,I hardly use it but also intend to do some scroll work,I paid $50AU for it from a mate of mine, he always reminds me of the value of them now I think it is the full size, 240lb ?
I checked out your workshop thread, very impressive,  :)

Thanks Don & Roger, PS I will go over your Keats build soon,

Jumped into the workshop after work tonight, and got a bit more completed on the upper and lower arms.

As mentioned, really my first time using a rotary table, I used a  MT2 dead centre and my recently purchased Starrett Wiggler set, (Starrett make such good quality tooling hard to find in Aus)
I am sure there are better ways of picking up the centre of a Rotary table, ? but I think this method worked, and close enough for a "government job"
The little jig worked great and I will use it again soon.
PS, how do add the comments to the attachments, ? I will have a search, :)

Thanks
Gary

Hello, I Had a chance to spend some time in the workshop last weekend, happy to be making a couple of chips, The arms are nearly finished now, and I will cut the slots for the knurl wheels this week,

First photo, I decided to tack weld the 2 arms together and bore the hole as I don't have a 3/4" reamer, I figured the welds would be sacrificial as the ends get machined.

The half hole on the top arm is 5/8",  I used a piece of similar size steel as the arm and clamped it together in the mill to enable the top arm "1/2 a hole" to be drilled, this worked well.

Last couple of photos are the arms back on the rotary table, to enable the radius to be milled,

Thanks Gary

Hello, I have finally had a chance to spend some more time on the Hemingway knurling tool, been a busy couple of months, starting with a small bush fire on my property, Easter Sat, so basically been cleaning up after that unplanned event, repairing fencing took most of my spare time, and  falling a few "widow makers" gum trees.

First couple of photos show, final progress on the arms,
and final assembly with the knurls, the pins and locking tabs, lots of rotary table work,
Thanks Gary

In my part of the world, as in yours, we're painfully aware of the havoc even a seemingly small grass fire can lead to. Glad yours didn't get out of hand and the damage was fairly minimal. I've been following along with your build quietly but with interest.

Thanks Ron, luckily it was a mild day. (and you would know all about Eucalyptus's)

Few more photos,
All the milling is now complete, hopefully this weekend, I can start the lathe up  :D,
The Side plates, and Guide plates are all done now, I used a linishing belt to help remove the "orange peal" from the BMS,  All all the small "rats & mice" pieces are also completed.
And my Shop Dog, Alfie, enjoying shed life, in-between playing catch, (he nudges my leg constantly for attention to chase ball) ,

Beautiful work on the Knurling tool, Gary!  You're going to have a really nice tool when it's completed!

It must be fun to have a friend out in the shop with you.  Ten plus years ago when I was redesigning my shop one time (yes, that happens every few years for me :)) we'd just gotten a dog (a black lab mix kind of thing) - the sweetest dog you can imagine.  And I made a spot for her in the shop.  I even got a nice doggy bed for her and everything.  Turns out, she hated being out in the shop.  She'd rather stay in the house with my wife.  If I brought her out to the shop she'd stand by the door and stare at it, willing it to open.  I'd make her lay in her bed, which she'd do because she's so well behaved.  But in a few minutes, she'd get up and go stand by the door again.  She never spent any time out in the shop with me.  Clearly, not a shop dog.

Now she's almost 14 years old, deaf as a door post, and can barely move her back legs. Still the sweetest thing on God's green earth.  But doesn't like the shop.  She'll just lay by my wife's chair, or go to whatever room in the house she's in and lay down.  She's a house dog.  And a Mama's girl.

I'm glad your buddy likes to be out in the shop with you!  Enjoy it! :)

Enjoyed seeing the pictures of the excellent work on the nearly done knurling tool, not long before it can see some action.   Nice photo of Alfie in the 'shop.  One of my model engineering friends , another member, had a hen that liked to spend time in the workshop with him!   Dave

Thanks everyone for your kind comments, been a fun project, spare time is my enemy unfortunately.
However I have had a chance to get down to the workshop after work last week, for a few nights, and got some other key bits made, my bestie went down and lit the shed heater for me in the day, so was nice and cosy.

I decided to crack on with the cam adjustment pin and lever, and the 3/8 BSF screw feed screw,
I had a go at single point thread cutting the 3/8 feed screw, and its amazing how what you learned all them years ago come back to you.
I had my old trade school workshop manuals to refer back on, and was great just reading the old book, (1976, first year apprentice ) would have to be 25 years ago since I single point cut a thread.
I made one mistake, a big one, and pumped out a reject on my first attempt at thread cutting :hammerbash:, everything turned out perfect, but instead of a 20 tpi, I think I had some weird 21.5 tpi?? when I done my "touch pass" and used my thread gauge, I thought, it did not look quite right? I checked my setting and all looked correct, so off I went, lesson learned, "when it does not quiet look right" it is not !
one of my gears was wrong, !

Another thing I noticed , my lathe carbide tip tools did not like the silver steel and was getting a horrible surface finish, once again I reffed to my trade school book, and ground up a HSS cutting tool, this worked a treat.
Any how a few photos of the knurling tool progress.
Thanks Gary

I will try and explain what I mean by "wrong gear", rather incorrect location, if that makes sense ??  :embarassed:

I think I got it, but as mentioned - You got the proccess right Gary -> it should not be a problem for you to do the correct 20 TPI.

Hello,
I spent quite a few hours in the shed on Saturday and I am going to call the knurling tool finished.

Been a really fun project when I have been able to work on it,

Saturdays work was only really small tasks, fitting the tool post holder, fitting all the components, and generally some fine tuning.

The Hemingway kit is great to use, and in general just enough material to be able to complete all the tasks the DWG's are clear, with a few missing dimensions to exercise my numskull,

If i had one complaint, it is the tooling call-up, Metric, BA, BSF taps and dies where required, I have plenty of metric, no BA, and a far bit of UNC/UNF, buts that's about it, anyhow, overcome not spending "hard earned's" by compromising,

It is good to be on the tools again, and learning all the time with all the info on this site, thanks.
Probably knock off a few basic shop tools in the next week, not sure what my next challenge might be ??

First few photos are the finished tool,
and a couple on the job, and the tool worked great,

And last photo, Alfie who demanded a bush walk after sitting in the workshop for serval hours  ;D

Hi all,

I made the "basic" Hemingway knurling tool many years ago - very useful tool that I use very often in my workshop. I got straight knurls for it simply because I prefer them!

Your photos of your knurling tools looks superb !!

The embossing wheels supplied by Hemingway Kits were too finely divided for me.
I ordered suitable wheels from RC-Machines in Luxembourg and modified the unit slightly for this purpose.
