Thank you, Chuck!

With the engine running I think it's time to wrap up this build thread. Even if I had not ever got it to run, I would still feel good about this project. As my first IC engine built to (mostly) my own design, it's been a huge learning experience. Along the way I've experimented with some things, some more successfully than others, but driven by a desire to learn for myself both where some of the “conventional wisdom” comes from, and what was possible with only relatively basic, 1904 era technology. I've thoroughly enjoyed the hours of research, thinking, designing, and especially building.

Errata: In reply #267 above, I incorrectly typed Brunell when I meant to credit George Britnell for the valve seat cutter I made from his drawings. This has been corrected.

And here's to all the members of MEM who have followed this build, both those who commented and those who simply watched quietly. I appreciate your company. :wine1:
Regards,
Ron

OK, maybe one more video.

Shave and a haircut Start and a run -- 2-Bits
<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R59DNyb2Y-Y" target="_blank">http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R59DNyb2Y-Y</a>

The first video was running on gasoline, this one is on camp stove fuel. I think it quits because I haven't quite found the fuel tank height and/or mixture sweet spot for that yet. Also, midway through, you'll notice that I plug in the exhaust collector.

Not quite stone cold, since it took a few takes to get a decent video, but not warmed up either. It has started on the first pull from stone cold, but only when there are no cameras or witnesses around. I've even managed to start it a few times with just a flip of the flywheel over compression by hand, but not reliably. During the trouble-shooting phase the drill starter was great, but I found (to my surprise) with that I couldn't easily tell when it actually started. Now that it starts easier I prefer the rope pull.

Thanks Kim!

Ron

RReid--I am impressed. Your engine looks really good, and it runs. I am approaching the end of my build, which was inspired by yours, and I hope mine runs as well as yours.---Brian

Just a few final beauty shots showing the “end state”.

This morning I tried running it with the “supplemental” external flywheel removed. Happily it did start and run pretty well that way, but not quite as well as with it in place, as would be expected. On the plus side it restores the visibility into the crankcase, and it was kind of fun to see the golden blur of the conrods whizzing around. I'll leave that flywheel off for display purposes, and probably put it back on when I want to run the engine.

Looks great!
I really like the contrast of the horiz/vert fins plus the ribs around the crankshaft.

Ron:

Just my two cents, not worth two bits. Very nice work and beautiful engine.

Thank you for the build log, it has been fun.

Thank you, Hugh. Your two cents is definitely worth far more than two bits!

(I've cheated and added one more photo to my earlier post above)

I love the Quarter you put into it. Never would have thought of that. Nice touch.
