Hello from s.w. Missouri
« on: February 24, 2022, 12:45:57 PM »
Hi Everyone

I'm a retired physics/mathematics educator.  My workshop is near the small town of Sparta, MO.  I have blacksmithing as well as machining gear in my shop.  I've been smithing since retirement (9 years) and I have a long time interest in machining and also a bit of home foundry background.  I'm looking forward to learning from this group!

Welcome to the Forum

What sort of engines are you interested in, IC, steam, hot air?
Best regards

Hi Roger

I meant to say this in my first post.  The specific thing that led me to this forum was a desire to get started on a set of Rider-Ericsson stirling cycle pumping engine castings that I poured many years ago.  It's one of those (way too many) projects that I always said I'd get to "after retirement."  I guess "after retirement" is now, and it seems like time is passing very quickly.  The scale of the castings are for a 2" power piston.

Many years ago my Dad got me started collecting vintage engines, hit-and-miss farm engine kind of things, that's what got me headed down this path.  I've always been interested in the air engines, never have had one.

Welcome to the forum John. As well as your stirling engine, I do hope we may see some examples of your smithing. I picked up a book on blacksmithing recently and I'd like to try my hand at it in a small way sometime.

Forging ahead regardless.

I'm just getting familiar with the forum operation.  Here's an attempt at a photo.  I'm active in the BAM, Blacksmith's Association of Missouri.  This trivet was a trade item for a recent meeting.  I've learned a lot from the BAM group, meetings and workshops/classes.

Welcome to the forum, John!

I had a hobby smithy years ago with a coal fired forge; had to dismantle it when I moved. If I could go back to it I'd probably switch to propane, but I just don't have the room now (and maybe not the arm strength ). Anyway I'm having plenty of fun with the machining and hope you do too. Don't hesitate to asks questions, this is a great bunch of folks.
Regards,
Ron

Welcome aboard, John.  I'm pleased to see that you made it here.

Out of curiosity I plugged "Rider-Ericsson" into the forum Search function and got a number of hits.  You may want to explore that avenue.

The trivet is artful and it's fascinating to imagine its fabrication.  Living in a Los Angeles suburb with an 80 year old body, I'm not contemplating trying it for myself but it really is intriguing.

Hi Gary

I had to google Tarkio.  We're about as far apart as we can be and still both be in MO.  I attended a Little Giant (blacksmith trip hammer) rebuild class in Nebraska City several years ago, and was in your part of the world.

I want to comment about how much I've been enjoying exploring this site and reading through some of the build logs and question and answer series.  The depth of knowledge (and helpfulness) is very evident.

A belated welcome from me

Yes - it's very easy to disappear down several "Rabitholes" here on site  ;D
I probably spend about an hour here everyday since the site opened many years ago  8)
As most sites, its a question about who frequent and who do the Admin  :praise2:

Best wishes
