Tiny Super
« on: February 11, 2022, 05:21:12 AM »
Hi All,

I came across this engine in a set of Popular Science mags from 1946. Looked like a nice little engine

Made a start on the cylinder.

Cheers

I love the early small engines and this one has character  :)

Jo

P.S. Its not that "Tiny"  ;)
Enjoyment is more important than achievement.

Tiny, not that tiny with 1" bore & stroke !

I also did oldtimer engines from this magazine, I will follow this build.

Hi All,
Got some more of the cylinder done today.
Used an arbour to hold the cylinder, uses a 1/4" bolt with a 1/4x32 thread for the plug hole. I went with a 1/4" plug as the 3/8" plugs are getting harder to get, the 1/4" ones are readily available.
Machined the ports for exhaust and inlet. Set up in dividing head for the correct spacing.
Also machined the cooling fins, I like the look of the fins on the O&R engines, so I reconfigured the fins to suite.
The top of the head were machined with a 0.8mm slitting saw, and the cylinder fins with a 0.9mm HSS tool. Had to grind this one up.
Hope to get more done tomorrow.
Cheers
Andrew

Good looking cylinder

You didn't show, but I presume that you made the holes for the transfer port in the same setup too

Best wishes

Per,
The lower transfer port will be cut in the cylinder lower flange after the transfer passage has been fitted.

Hi All,
Done more, I do not have any black iron for the transfer port, had a 3/4" copper fitting, good enough, formed up and silver soldered to cylinder, then cleaned up.
Remounted the cylinder in the lathe and machined a couple of thou under sized.
Mounted in mill and machined cylinder flange, drilled mount holes, and machined out transfer port.
Then lapped and honed cylinder to size.
Mounted piston blank in lathe and machined to size, and cut ring grove.
Marked out positions for milling. Mounted in mill, drilled and reamed piston pin hole, machined transfer port, machined transfer and exhaust deflector's, machined piston internals.
Cheers
Andrew

Are you heat treating your rings? There seem to be a number of different thoughts on this  ::)  :headscratch:  :wine1:

Roger,
There is no not of it in the plans or writing, steel cylinder. I may heat treat a couple just to be safe.

Hi All,
Had a big day today.
I could not get any bronze flat bar, so made some.
Cut a piece of round bar over length, cut of the big end cap piece, faced both and soft soldered together. Set in mill and using a slitting saw I got two pieces for con-rods.
Marked out, then drilled and tapped for big end cap bolts.
Drilled out holes and reamed big and little ends.
Turned up some arbours to hold the con-ron, mounted in mill and machined both ends and sides.
Swapped to lathe and machined both ends, then back to mill to finish the sides.
Drilled and cleaned up the oil holes in both ends of the rod.
Cheers
Andrew

Thank you.

Hi All,
Started on the crank today, cut piece to length, center drilled for crank and bigend center's, mounted in mill and hoged out big end.
Mounted on lathe between center's and machined big end.
Cheers

Hi All,
Removed from lathe and re-set to machine crankshaft shafts, had to reset and glue in the crank spacer. Started with the front shaft, then machined the rear rotor/drum, drilled for crank webs and rough machined.
Machined up a jig to hold the crank and mounted in the mill and finished machining of the crank webs.
Removed the crank spacer and cleaned up the machining marks and edges.
Cheers

Hi All,
Got the rear cover intake done today. machined rear cover, lapped in the crank, then machined outer part/intake of the cover in mill.
Set up crank and machined intake port.
Fitted intake tube to back-plate and checked the assembly.
Cheers

Hi All,
Easy day today, went with electronic ign, machined up the pickup ring and prop driver, mounted prop driver and spot drilled the crank for the set screws to lock to the crank, made up a mounting plate, and ready to go.
Mounted on test stand and run, played around with the timing and mixture settings..
Got it running steady and consistent.
If anyone knows of any other OLD engine plans like this, could you let me know, always looking for them.
This is the end of the build.
Cheers

great runner you have made, congratulations !
I see that you have replaced the contact breaker by a Hall sensor, but
the timing of the spark seems to be adjusted for once, and not on the fly

I use a Rcexl ign box, has auto advance in it.
