Cost of Steel

So, I read an article watched a YT video the other day* that implies a lot of our steel shortage is due to China refusing to allow Australian coal ships to unload.  Apparently the Aus foreign minister(?) made a comment about wanting to investigate the possible origins of Covid19 in Wuhan, and China responded with a ban on Aus imports (or higher tariffs or whatever).  China imports a lot of coal, and a lot of that supply comes from Aus coal mines.  Without a steady stream of coal, a lot of Chinese power plants and foundries have shut down, so the world is needing to find their iron and steel from other sources.  Short supply = higher prices, Economics 101.  China has apparently started to allow the Aussie coal barges to begin offloading their cargo again (after several provinces having power outages during the cold winter months), but it will probably be a few months before the supply chain unchokes.

Lets get it in perspective bent...it was actually our PM who made that perriodontal comment  & Australia as a Nation is suffering

Barley, wheat, coal, , seafood.... all slapped with  excessive tariffs

China is still using Australian 'coking coal' and producing their required tonnage of steel, it is the 'steaming coal' [power generation] that is now in short supply [in the 100,000 tonners anchored off a few Chinese ports]

I run a small laser cutting business. When prices were at the highest I was paying around DKK 16 per kg for S235 steel sheet. Prices have dropped back to DKK 12 now but will never go back to the DKK 8 I paid early 2021.  DKK 8.00 = € 0.91
