Elmers Pumping Engine
« on: December 31, 2021, 01:43:53 PM »
Having a frustrating time getting the cam shafts on my Atkinson lorry working properly. I have been taking time off from that problem to build a few of the Elmers engines.
So far I have built the Radial engine, a small Mill engine and the Elmers No42, albeit a twin version. Have now started on the Elmers pumping engine.

So far have made the base, the two platforms and the bearing supports and the four columns.

A great looking set of engines! I found the three Elmer's engines that I built to be fun and rewarding. You've done super nice work on yours, I'll be looking forward to seeing more progress on the pumping engine.

Great jobs! I love your interpretations and the presentations.

Your interpretation of the mill engine is inspired. Seems like everyone builds that engine, but I never did like the look of the block cylinder design. I would try something more like what you've made.

I really love your twin oscillator! My first build from plans was the #42.

Spent New Years Day making the pumps and valves

And this morning fitted them together
Made a "C" spanner to fit the pump glands, but its hiding somewhere

Made a start on the cylinders and assembled them on the frame to check that everything lined up OK. Will shape the cylinders when all the other holes and steam passages are drilled.

Have done a bit more to the engine now that the weather has warmed up a little (gets surprisingly cold in the Algarve in winter).
Have bored the cylinders and drilled the steam and exhaust passages. I have partially shaped the cylinders, but may fully round them off to make them look a bit more realistic rather square as in the plans.
Have made the pistons and rods. Now waiting for some brass and steel to come from England (can’t easily get it here in Portugal) so I can get on with the bearing blocks and the yokes to connect cylinders to the pumps.
Did not have any suitable bolts etc so have made them from BA hex stock.
The base is made from a length of solid wood kitchen worktop that was left over.

Great 'Family Pic' and good to see you back in the shed

So when you mention cold weather in Southern Portugal - what kind of temperature ?

well looking set of engines, nicely finished, and the pumping engine looks promising too !
It seems that the n°43 has an Hackworth expansion link for reversing and adjusting the movement, could we see it in action ?

Zephyr, I'll try and do a little movie of the no 43 in action.

Admiral, I live in the mountains and it can get down to near zero at nights. During the day its quite warm, but it takes forever for the heat to soak through the thick stone walls of the house. An old Quinta or farm.

That's a great engine - coming on very nicely! Spring is on the way, should be warming up soon. The snow and ice has gradually started receding here, so there is hope!

Ah yes - that explains it - haven't thought about height induced lover temperatures  :-[

Inside isolation would help quite a lot, but also decreeses the available area + it can have some other issues if not done the best way.

Did a bit more to my Elmers Pumping Engine.
Made the bearing blocks. With a very fine slitting saw cut a shallow groove around them to make them look like split bearing.
The plane suggest making the flywheel as heavy as possible so that the engine will run slow.
So the plans suggest a 3 inch by 1/2 inch flywheel, but I have managed to squeeze in a 3/4 inch, and just over 3 inch dia.
It was made in two parts. Using a piece of cored steel bar/ tube that i had and the hub press fitted and then the flywheel trued up on a mandrel.

Great work - and your "split bearing" line is very convincing.

I've built three of Elmer's engines, and been inclined to think "that's enough". Seeing your work on this one makes me think "well, maybe one more someday". Very nice work!

I have now finished my Elmer's Pumping Engine.

With the heavier flywheels I can run it very slow. Would love to post a video, but Ytube no longer works for me with Safari on my Mac.
Will have to try another video host site.
