Hello, new member in North Carolina
« on: December 20, 2021, 04:36:26 PM »
Hello,
one of your members recommended I look at this site, and I think it will be very informative. I have some self taught machining skills, and even use my machines for profit now and then. I've been a traditional blacksmith for my 50 year career, making historic house hardware and tools by hand at the anvil, so machining is not only a new set of skills, but a completely new way of thinking, measuring, and problem solving. It is quite a contrast to working by hand, judging by eye, and fitting by trial rather than by measurement. However, I'm very interested in learning and developing new ways of thinking. I have a Harrison VS330, a Wade 8a, a Clausing 8520, and a Burke #4, and enjoy learning to make better use of them.
I have not had an urge to make engines yet, but who knows??? this site could be a bad influence.

Peter

Hi Peter, welcome to the forum!  The blacksmith skills will come in handy even on a machining project at times. And we'll do our best to be bad influences...! I started out as a woodworker, and now look at me!

Welcome! Even if engines are not your thing, you will find a lot on here about machining methods and metrology techniques that are appropriate for anything at all. I love engines, but also love to see anything related to metalwork and fabrication generally. I was just reading about home smithing, which I think is fascinating, so I look forward to seeing more!

Forging ahead regardless.

thanks for all the gracious welcome messages. I've already spent some time on the site and can see I'll benefit from hanging around here.
Perhaps I'll be able to offer some good information in return.
