A Shay in 41 boxes
RReid:
This is from an interesting piece in the latest newsletter from the Timber Heritage Association. They are the group up in the Redwood country who maintain and operate the "Falk" steam locomotive, among other things.
In 1908, the Little River Redwood Company purchased a new Shay to move logs from the woods to their new mill in Bullwinkle (near Mckinlyeyville, where I lived for 12 years). To get it there, they had it disassembled and shipped overland in 41 boxes. The packing list is reproduced below. There is even an instruction book included in box 26. The ultimate live steam kit!
Dan Rowe:
Man some of those boxes were big like box 37 Boiler....
They sent the tools needed also.
My boxes for the Aster Western Maryland #6 and the Greenbrier #12 were a whole lot smaller.
Cheers Dan

Yes, including a couple of chisels even, but no hammer to strike 'em with!
By the way, Dan, we passed through Dripping Springs last week. Camped at Pedernales Falls SP on our way down to Big Bend. Pretty area!
Jo:
Where do I sign up for my one :)
