Sexy's new friend
« on: November 10, 2021, 03:50:29 PM »
You may recall I have a house Mill named Sexy https://www.modelenginemaker.com/index.php/topic,2775.msg47253.html#msg47253

Up until recently Sexy lived in the library with Little C my Cowells Lathe to keep him company but  I decided she would get more use in the main workshop so she has up and left him and moved in with Mr Silky  ::) My Supplier expressed great concern over the idea of having a lonely Milling machine so has "donated" a new friend for Sexy who once restored can live inside with him.

She has lever cross/top slides, a lever tailstock that like the headstock takes the titchy W12 collets  Then I remembered I had a old capstan tailstock hiding away and  :o it even still has the correct bed clamps hiding underneath it  :)

So lots of work to do, including sorting out some sort of motor  and then the difficult bit having to find a new name for her  :noidea:

Jo,

Hope you are well. If Sexy the milling machine has moved out to keep Silky company.  Then surely you have a lonely Little C inside.  So is the new lathe to keep Little C company??

Ahh, my brain obviously did not quite follow your post.  I now understand.

Best hurry up and get it working, there are a lot of 8ba studs needed soon which the lever action should be ideal for.

What is it like for one off components? do the levers give enough feel that you could work with a dti on the slides and hit a dimension?

You just use the DTI to set the stops.

Looks rather like a Schuablin 65/70. One of my colleagues has a similar looking lathe he made during his apprenticeship. I must take some pictures.
Best regards

But for the feminine gender of the nice lathe, I would suggest "Septimus"  in reference to the specific antiquity that you mention.  Don't want to get into controversial teritory, but perhaps a lathe can take on a male name these days while retaining full femininity?  !!   Dave

My colleague's self built lathe. The casting were made by the apprentices at Sulzer and were then machined in various apprentice schools in Switzerland. He has never used it but knows other people who use them.

Its a shame he has not used it. It looks rather nice  :)

I've been cleaning, derusting, masking and a first bit of priming.  The bed and headstock had already been cleaned and serviced  Then left to go rusty  :wallbang: The sliding surfaces look to be in very good condition  :) (The bed is not a sliding surface )

I was pleased to find a servicing manual that has not only the blown up diagrams but also the dimensions of all parts including thread sizes so anything I don't have can be made if required. The only real challenge is that odd thread on the ends of the collets  :headscratch:

Name wise I have considered: Sira, Sylvette & Sylviane but currently "Schoey" is winning out
