Sexy's new friend
« on: November 10, 2021, 03:50:29 PM »
You may recall I have a house Mill named Sexy https://www.modelenginemaker.com/index.php/topic,2775.msg47253.html#msg47253

Up until recently Sexy lived in the library with Little C my Cowells Lathe to keep him company but  I decided she would get more use in the main workshop so she has up and left him and moved in with Mr Silky  ::) My Supplier expressed great concern over the idea of having a lonely Milling machine so has "donated" a new friend for Sexy who once restored can live inside with him.

She has lever cross/top slides, a lever tailstock that like the headstock takes the titchy W12 collets  Then I remembered I had a old capstan tailstock hiding away and  :o it even still has the correct bed clamps hiding underneath it  :)

So lots of work to do, including sorting out some sort of motor  and then the difficult bit having to find a new name for her  :noidea:

Jo,

Hope you are well. If Sexy the milling machine has moved out to keep Silky company.  Then surely you have a lonely Little C inside.  So is the new lathe to keep Little C company??

Best hurry up and get it working, there are a lot of 8ba studs needed soon which the lever action should be ideal for.

What is it like for one off components? do the levers give enough feel that you could work with a dti on the slides and hit a dimension?

You just use the DTI to set the stops.

Looks rather like a Schuablin 65/70. One of my colleagues has a similar looking lathe he made during his apprenticeship. I must take some pictures.

But for the feminine gender of the nice lathe, I would suggest "Septimus"  in reference to the specific antiquity that you mention.  Don't want to get into controversial teritory, but perhaps a lathe can take on a male name these days while retaining full femininity?  !!   Dave

My colleague's self built lathe. The casting were made by the apprentices at Sulzer and were then machined in various apprentice schools in Switzerland. He has never used it but knows other people who use them.

Its a shame he has not used it. It looks rather nice  :)

I've been cleaning, derusting, masking and a first bit of priming.  The bed and headstock had already been cleaned and serviced  Then left to go rusty  :wallbang: The sliding surfaces look to be in very good condition  :) (The bed is not a sliding surface )

I was pleased to find a servicing manual that has not only the blown up diagrams but also the dimensions of all parts including thread sizes so anything I don't have can be made if required. The only real challenge is that odd thread on the ends of the collets  :headscratch:

Name wise I have considered: Sira, Sylvette & Sylviane but currently "Schoey" is winning out

It's got to be Lexey or (Lexie) to go with Sexy.

Are you going for that nice shade of green that they did them in?

I have a very good reason not to pick that one Dave :hellno:

End of the day: lots of bits, many primed, all cleaned and the postits indicate the bits that need replacing. I have to decide how much filling and sanding I want to do  before more painting   :-\

Deserves the chips filling and then a  coat of good machine enamel which should flow out to a nice smooth finish and will resist oil and use better than your average spray can.

I fear Schoey may have stuck

Discussions with my Supplier has lead me to invest in some of the correct colour paint, so she is going to be the standard RAL 7031 Blue-Grey. It will make her look a little younger than her actual age, without pretending she is a Spring Chicken with the (RAL 6011) Green  ::)

The paint is going to take about a week to get here so it seems I have plenty of time to make replacements for the damaged bits. I still struggle with this idea of "plenty of time" it never seems to happen   :headscratch:

While I have a lovely NEW  Brooks-Crompton 1/6th HP 3 ph motor I have been instructed I need a 1/3rd HP one. I have a 1/3rd HP one that came off of my Power Hacksaw but having taken the cover off I found three terminals not six  :wallbang:  Checking on the plate  STAR... Time to go fishing.

Other end of the motor on the outside and look at that  a suspicious bit of sleeving over something. Cutting the sleeving off I found the Star point  :pinkelephant: Having separated out the wires, buzzed them out  soldered on a nice High voltage extension and tied the new wires in, with supplier approved heat shrink.

I need to sort out some new terminals now for the other end but yes they still all buzz out so looking hopeful.

As Schoey is going to live inside she needs a VFD and today this has arrived:  its far eastern in origin and cheap as chips. Reading the warning label does not inspire me to think the instructions may be intelligible. I really love programming these things :paranoia:

I decided not to install three extra terminals but to bring out three leads and then connect them to the next pin along to form the delta connection.

I know the wiring is not complete and is still DANGEROUS but I am waiting for the mains isolation switch to arrive. In the meantime having connected it to the Chinese box:

<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jGC-TwEtrQU" target="_blank">http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jGC-TwEtrQU</a>

Yes it runs and provides speed control  8) No the screen does not flash it is a function of the camera  :headscratch: Before I get in trouble: I have since this video added a Pclip to hold the 3ph wire and will do the same to the mains input once I have included the two pole Emergency off/isolation switch in circuit.

I am concerned that having turned the inverter off and unplugged it the screen was still on  :o So I tried turning the motor on while the LED screen was still alight and yes it ran the motor for a couple of seconds before stopping  :paranoia: and the LEDs on the screen going out. This tells me there are some large capacitors inside which I will need to be wary of  :zap:

That's a nice gentle start.

Will you tend to leave it in the middle pully position and just use the VFD for speed changes?

No I will be using the pulleys. Speed control on such a small machine is a bit pointless. What you really need is a range of speeds rather than variability.

I still have to work out the pulley mechanism. The original one includes a clutch :noidea:

I thought it might be nice to be able to drop down to about 100rpm for threading with a die for all those studs in your future which is mostly what I use the low end of my speed range for.

What will be the three speeds you end up with?

460, 780, 1320, 1850, 3100 & 5300 RPM  ::)

For the 10 or so threads I normally add on the end of a stud I use a mandrel handle on Little C, this one has a headstock handwheel.

Even though you aren't completely finished with the motor - I bet that it felt good to see it move when you pressed that button  ;D

I would have said that your wiring should be OK - but you might need locking fluid or similar to prevent future disasters .... UPS - just had another look and now I see that there are locking tabs (just not engaged yet).

So, with that inverter Jo, it seems only professional people can go wining (and presumable dining).  Does that mean the non-professionals have to stick with beer?  Or gin?

Now this thread has me confused - easily done these days I'd admit - on the gender convention re workshop machines.  Now ships, I know, are always a very female she, as are cars.  But what is the convention on lathes?  And on milling machines?

I ask as my elderly German Weiler lathe doesn't know whether to be called Weilma or Weilhem.  It needs sorting, and correctly, as we don't do this new-fangled transgender stuff in my workshop, we are all far too old for all that nonsense. :old:

The old rule was anything with character that needed treating well to perform was given a female gender. I use the masculine for Sexy  and Mr Silky    Other than Mr Silky none of my Machines have been given gendered names

I suspect there are a few lathe's whose given names imply their parents are yet to marry  :lolb:

A bit more assembly completed. Enough to clear my central bench of her bits  :)

There are still a few of the stops whose knurls look like they have been abused which will require to be replaced. I will also be adding the locks nuts which if they were still there would have meant there was no need to abuse the knurls on the screws. The most annoying thing of the afternoon was when I found the cross slide lever mount had been attached using M4 screws - in 4.5 threaded holes. M4.5 is one of the few dies I do not have so one is ordered and I hope to get it early next week

The tailstock stop is missing and I will be making a new one. I suspect people have been using the little flat on the side of the lever to stop against  :ShakeHead: not realising that was there for the lever to stop on the other side of the missing distance stop. I've just spotted another screw is still missing there  :wallbang:

I also tried putting the capstan tailstock on her to find the odd shaped bits that go into the bed to clamp it in place are a bit wide and replacements will be needed. Also for the hex headed cam screws which look like they have been chewed  :headscratch:

Your lathe looks to be the same principle as the Britan lathe, I served my apprenticeship at Britan's, mainly milling and grinding.

Hi Mike, yes the capstan tailstock is very much like you get on a Britan

I've been quietly making swarf in the background. Doing a bit of offset drilling/boring  :) Fitting bearings and finally I have a countershaft assembly.

The next job is to decide where I want the shaft to run. Traditionally it runs above the motor but to do this means the motor pulley would hang off the edge of my mounting board  The other option is to turn it round and mount the motor further over or there is a third option   :noidea:

I often find that I use much more time to contemplate all the possible solutions, and their pros and cons, than actually putting pen to paper and finish the drawings - or the similar actions in the workshop etc.

... and often I only find the optimum solution after a few different builds - no matter what kind of project ...
Sometimes a good number of the options can be shot down, by a good partner in crime - but in this case I do not have any experience .... so hopefully somebody else here can chime in  :)

I would think having the motor off to the left would be better, keeps it out of the way of flying chips/oil better, and you could build a shield for the motor and belts easier over there.

Can the motor also go down under the table top so the intermediate pulleys are level with the axis of the headstock?

The original AC motor I had on my Taig lathe was mounted in a position similar to your last photo. Mostly that was OK, but there were times when it was just in the way. I'm happy that it is no longer there.

Thanks Guys  :)

The headstock on this Schaublin requires the belt to feed from above or to the rear (other headstocks are available which feed from below). It would be possible to mount the motor slightly below as the Cowells Lathe does but I intend on mounting the lathe on that board so it can put on a "household table top" with the thought it could be put away but I will not be able to lift it ::) .

Thanks Ron, the third option is to turn the motor round - this is looking like the favoured choice: This will allow the motor to sit behind the headstock with the primary belt behind the swarf throwing zone. Thankfully because the motor is three phase it is easy to reverse its direction if required.

I would have thought it is only the layshaft that needs to be mounted to suit the flat belt, the motor could be on the floor if need be.

But understand you wanting it all on a board, a lower table and some feet on the board would allow the motor to go below and the layshaft above while maintaining the same working height.

Though I don't really see the problem about the motor pulley overhanging the base board so would fit it that way round or get a bigger bit of board.  :)

If it was my intention to permanently mount it on a table I would use the spare microscope table I have and then yes I could cut holes in the top but I am planning to use it on an existing household table. Yes one could slide the dining table apart and dangle the motor where the leaves go but that is missing the point: I am putting together a standard Schaublin bench top arrangement.

Next job: layshaft mounting bracket  :)

I found a nice big thick piece of ali for the holding bracket. Then I started drawing out the options....

Long term I would like a foot and flange mounting motor and mount the feet on the base and the bracket on the flange and pivot on the mounting bolts. The available motors vary a bit but most have a 80mm flange and 100mm PCD mounting screw holes. The issue is that some have the connection box on the top rather than the side/end, which means they are about 50mm taller  Having drawn this out the minimum distance I could get away with was actually the maximum length I could get out of my bit of Ali  :)

As I do not have a foot/flange mounting motor (yet) in the meantime I would need to mount the bottom of the bracket on a bracket of its own. I started by drilling the four mounting holes for the layshaft and boring through for the eccentric. Next I need to drill and tap the four holes on the cast iron mounting flange...

Stop press/work: There is a possibility of a (free) motor with foot/flange mounting.... photos to follow, or so I have been told  :noidea:

Looking good Jo.  Nice of you to bring the high end little Swiss tools together.

I've got two 70's myself and a big project this year has been a complete reconditioning a 3rd beater 70 I rescued.  There some content on this page, but the posting hasn't l kept up to the project progress...its almost done

https://www.metallum.shop/reconditioning-a-schaublin-70/
(there's separate links for headstock, tailstock, etc

I spent last weekend on a Rube Golgberg set up to grind the spindle taper.  I've also got another on deck with the drive you have shown in post 31 if you need any dimensions/photos.

I also built the two stage drive shown below for use with the under bench drive style of Schuablin 70.  It could adapted to use above for the style of lathe you have.  Its accomplishments are a two stage drive (great range), quick adjustment via t slots for both belts and a single lever and toggle that tensions/loosens both belts

The two stage is imo the way to go.  VFD's are not great for speed reduction (they give constant torque, what you want is constant HP...i.e. more torque at lower speeds).  The lathe has a DC motor and speed controller but it performs better with a belt change, especially from high to low range.

Anyway, nice seeing another one put back into service

Thanks Mcgyver, I've just had a nose through your pages on restoring your 70. I noticed a few differences  The headstock bearings on Schoey are just like the ones on the BCA headstock: You fit a shim in the slit on the side of the bearing to limit how far it shrinks down when you tighten up the headstock adjuster nuts.

There was two 70's where I picked up Schoey from, I had the choice of this one takes W12 collets the other one F type. As I wanted compatibility with Sexy I opted for the one that uses W12s, which is this second operation lathe (= levers rather than spindles everywhere). The great thing about lever fed lathes is they are either very tired from working hard on a production line or, like this one, do not show any wear on any of the slides and all of the original scraping is still immaculate  ;D Ok so the bed was abused when it was left outside in the rain  :hammerbash: to get rusty  at some point in its life. But other than needing to be level - its not a sliding surface.

I do rather like the Schaublin Service manual and the way it provides dimensioned drawings of all the parts allowing you to make any replacement you may need

I have seen photos of the "other motor"  :noidea:

I have decided to continue with this motor until I pick up the other. (It is currently on a pillar drill and the drill itself looks useful  )

I now have a bracket on which to hang the countershaft. We are getting nearer to being able to actually run Schoey  :)

I can report that Schoey's new motor assembly allows her to go round and round  :cartwheel: I had a bit of fun with the Chinese VFD setting up the remote pendant because I wrongly understood some of the instructions

While I continue replacing the various screws that have damaged heads I decided that really all that is preventing me from trying her out was a tool holder so a quick trip to my supplier (and a vast escape of moths  :ShakeHead: ) who came up with a lovely little Multifix for her  8)

I foolishly enquired about the missing headstock lever feed and borrowing a spare spindle to act as a master when cutting some back plates... So yes a lever feed for the headstock, actually lots of lever feed handles for the headstock, a spare tailstock and two headstocks :headscratch: One heads stock needs stripping and binning as the casting is damaged. Then I need to start giving away the head stock lever feed hands to any one who ventures into the workshop (hopefully someone can come up with a use for these other than being able to claim they have a piece of a schaublin  ::) ). The only bit with possibly any value is the complete tailstock

Where they written in Chinglish  :LittleDevil:   .... besides, I think that we all have read instructions that 'changed meaning to us', with time and experience with the item it should help one to understand - I know for a fact that the constructor usually don't write the best instructions (been there and done that) :ShakeHead:

Nice to see that you are still making progress with your new friend. I hope you're doing well too

Yes  ::)

Swarf sign  :whoohoo: Swarf sign  :whoohoo:

Just that first couple of sweeps with the Levers has taught me so much:

1, you must set the stops  (they are still very stiff to move hence the graunched knurls on them so I didn't use them ::))

2, You must use the stops - otherwise the tool moves away from the work as you sweep down the piece and you end up with a taper

2a, You might be in a rush but don't forget to set the height of the tool  :stickpoke:

3, This will be really good for free hand sculpture :naughty:

More work to do... I need to replace both of the threaded knurled stops and add some of the intermediate nuts and think about putting increments on them.

We had snowdrop too.  About a foot of it.

Jo, that lathe looks gorgeous.
