Compound Internal Combustion Engines

Just got sent the attached article by a friend, on an engine type that I had never heard of before, compound internal combusion engines!

Apparently there were several firms that offered compound gasoline engines. The Compound automobile used a Graham-Fox 3 cylinder compound internal combustion engine with two high pressure cylinders exhausting into a central low pressure cylinder. It was said to be very smooth and quiet. One car survives in the Fountainhead Automobile Museum in Alaska.

Anyone here ever try and build one? For those looking to build something different than the usual kits....!

Interesting Chris. I can't say I've ever heard of one but then back in the fantastic era of machinery there were so many unique mechanical contrivance.

Don't you love it when "friends" send you details of something interesting   ::) I always suspect they want me to design/build one and iron out all the problems for them  :lolb:

It is rather interesting though   I will have to see what I can find in my library.

Found these: http://www.douglas-self.com/MUSEUM/POWER/unusualICeng/compoundIC/compoundIC.htm

Actually there are lots of interesting stuff on that site  Here is the home page: http://www.douglas-self.com/MUSEUM/museum.htm

And build one (or two) for them!

Great links to that type of engine Jo!
