Tool post – lathe milling attachment – slotting tool
« on: April 12, 2024, 02:37:21 PM »
For a new project which will be a watercooled alfa-stirling I needed a cooler element. This cooler looks as follows:

Inside the gaspath there are 75 internal fins to manufacture. I build a tool to mill the slots. It is a milling attachment which will be fixed in the lathe tool post. The tool is motorized with a speed controlled sewing motor.

A short movie shows how to produce the slots (subtitles in english language).

A similar slotting tool was proposed in the past by Andy Ross

This is fantastic. Thanks for posting it. Do you intend to show more here about your alpha Stirling project? I for one would enjoy it.--Tim

Very neat tool you made there!

Even with that, it looks like a LOT of work to cut all those internal cooling fins. Nicely done!

Dear all,
I acknowledge your nice comments very much.

Tim, certainly I will report about this project in the future. But it needs some more preconditions to realize, similar like this coolerfins challenge.
The alpha Stirling engine is a conversion on base of an existing twin air compressor.

Even with that, it looks like a LOT of work to cut all those internal cooling fins.
Kim
Kim, you are definitely right, it needs nevertheless a considerable number of hours to mill the slots.
But this was my way which are realistic for me.
There are a number of possibilities thinkable for producing slots:
key-slotting (manually or motorized), EDM processing, to buy an extruded part used in electronics bussiness, soldering fins, a milling process and so on.

Key-slotting manually I did in the past with only 3mm deep cooler slots; it was a very exhausting job (more than 100 slots). Never want going this way again.
EDM I donot have the possibility.
Soldering fins followed by additional lathe work would need to change the material choise to brass.
An extruded cooler would be the easiest way, but nothing in this size found on the market.
So, I finalized in my milling solution.

Thank you all again for these motivating comments

Richard

SteamR:

I just watched your video.

It may look like some kind of medieval torture device, but it did a fantastic job.  The sewing machine motor looks similar to the servo motor I put on my drill press - just smaller.  What was the kilowatt rating of your motor?  I have a couple of smaller machines that I would like to re-motor with a servo motor, but can't seem to find any motors smaller than 0.5-0.75KW.

Any chance of something like a Youtube channel name or where ever else that video is posted SteamR so I can search for it? Whatever I'm doing wrong, that "Flash Emulator" for videos refuses to work for me on this forum for any video link that's posted.
