Stainless cylinder for Rider Ericsson

I had such wonderful responses to me query about the expansion globes, I am going to try for another success...do you HAVE to use stainless for the cylinder, my kit came with a mild steel cylinder and stainless would be hard to find where I live, not to say  expensive.  I am assuming that many of these have been built using mild steel. Likewise the use of copper for the hot cap, I know that would be preferred but again it was not in the kit and is it necessary.

My opinion is that you would be fine with the mild steel hot end, if you silver soldered a copper hot cap on it would be even better. Brass or copper tube would not be a good choice here as the heat transfers to the cold end of the engine rapidly.
My buddy built the Denny Improved engine using copper tube and it did not run very well at all, he ended up making a new cylinder from steel with a copper cap and the engine runs great. He also turned very thin waist neat the top to help prevent the heat transfer like a lot of builders do.

Short lengths of stainless tube is available on Fleabay they sell it for exhausts, it is surprisingly cheap. It has a seam so only any good for the hot cap.

Cast iron makes a good displacer power cylinder.
