Swiss Bits
« on: September 12, 2021, 03:37:54 PM »
In celebration of our 33rd wedding anniversary we have been travelling around western Switzerland.

There are a few oddities like these vineyard rack railways. The rail is a piece of square section galvanized steel with a folded rack underneath. The locomotive has a small IC engine and a couple of lantern pinions to engage with the rack. I assume some sort of seat is attached to the frame when it is used.

Our hotel in Leukerbad had its own personal two person funicular to take you up to the cable car valley station.

Plinthed on a roundabout on the way to Zermatt was one of the first Gornergrat rack railway locomotives. Like the Jungfrau railway these were 3 phase to allow regenerative braking. It was said that two descending trains would power one ascending one.
Best regards

Roger

We also visited the Swiss Steam Park in Le Bouveret. This is nicely laid out with fine flowers and replicas of various Swiss buildings. There are a selection of 7 1/4" gauge steam locomotives (the track is dual gauge 5" and 7 1/4" but we didn't see any 5" rolling stock) and various diesel powered Swiss replica locos and train sets. Overhead electric power would look and smell better but the wire would be a bit close to the passengers heads  ::)

We also took a round trip on Lake Geneva on a diesel powered paddle boat.

A good time was had by all  :)  :)  :wine1:

There are lots of vineyards around here, and lots of hills, but no vineyard rack railways! Looks like a great anniversary get-away. Congratulations!

Ron

Hi Rodger,
 Congrats on 33 years!
Looks like you had a fun trip! The paddle steamer is the one we went on when we were over your way a couple of years back, we were told they were thinking about converting them to steam, we can live in hope!

Cheers Kerrin
Get excited and make something!

Once again thank you for all your kind comments  :)

Most of our time was spent walking in the mountains, I just put a few technical highlights on here initially.
