MY TAKE ON RUDY'S RADIAL

<< < (8/11) > >>

sid pileski:
Here is an update on my progress:

Making the heads.

Next, I'm going to make the air tubes to the heads. The rotary valve is done.
At this point, when the tubes are complete, it should run!

Question for those of you that have built this engine-

Did you drill the exhaust ports in the cylinders per his plans?

At this point, I have not included them.
My engine is up and running now.
I wonder if it would run any better/different with them?

It seems to run well enough on low pressure and has a nice sound to it.

RReid:
Hi Sid. I did include the cylinder exhaust ports on my engine. After I had it running, I taped those ports off as an experiment. I noted no difference in operation, but the sound changed slightly. With the ports open the individual exhaust beats are more distinct. Closed, with all the exhaust coming out the back of the valve, they blend more, giving a slightly more muffled, smoother note. The difference is not dramatic, but is noticeable.

Looking forward to seeing your beauty shots, and hopefully a video?

sid pileski:
Soon. Still have the rocker boxes to make and solder in place as well as the air tubes.
Need to make the faux exhaust tubes and the running stand.

Need to retire!!

Kim:
I put the exhaust holes in, per plan. But I never did the experiment that Ron did.  I assumed it just eased the exhaust path since the exhaust path out through the valve is a much longer, smaller diameter path.  But clearly (according to your and Ron's experience) those holes are not required :)
