Gamage's "NDC" Replica
« on: August 01, 2021, 10:20:45 AM »
I've just finished this little engine which was a nice break from the more involved Heinrici and Wall engines. It is based on an old advert that I found on the net plus after asking on ME forum I also got a couple of photos of an old engine.

I designed it in metric but kept it to approx the same size with 16mm x 16mm bore and stroke replacing the original 5/8 x 5/8. Also the first time I had done an engine with a double acting piston valve only having done single acting engines with them before, also first time with rod crosshead guides.

I'm quite pleased with how it turned out and considering the small flywheel and short conrod runs reasonably slowly. A video of it running, the table it is sitting on makes it sound a bit loud but soon quietens when I pick it up, it stopped because I put my finger over one of the exhausts. Also looks like a bit too much endplay in the crankshaft so will move the flywheel along a bit.

Terrific engine - like the crosshead design on it!

very elegant little engine, well done !
As said in the advert the original was cast in the "highest grade antifriction metal" ; lead and antimony ?

Thanks for all the comments

I'm not sure what the alloy was that they used but the one I got pictures of someone had tried to solder the broken eccentric rod and only managed to melt it so something with quite a low melting point.

The only problem now is should I make the Bassett-Lowke equivalent to keep it company?

Hello Jason,

Yes, make one.

As a young lad, I remember my nose pressed up against the Bassett-Lowke shop window in Manchester (sadly long gone) admiring all the delights and treasures on display. They must have had a lasting impression on me as I have been building model engines for most of my life.

Perhaps, maybe, I even saw the 'Eclipse High Speed Marine Engine on display, but the price tag of £9/0/0 was rather expensive and would have been way beyond a school boy's pocket money.
