Endangered crafts
« on: June 12, 2021, 11:53:03 AM »
The Ladies on my Cross stitch forum pointed me to this list of UK endangered crafts:

https://heritagecrafts.org.uk/redlist/categories-of-risk/

I was surprised how many of those I recognised but had not appreciated their perilous status. There is also a list of currently viable crafts:

https://heritagecrafts.org.uk/currently-viable-crafts/  which includes model engineering: https://heritagecrafts.org.uk/model-engineering/

I loved the bit under Techniques that says NB: there are too many separate skills to list here  ;)

Hello Jo,

It's encouraging to hear that they classify Model Engineering as a viable craft. So, does that mean that only the model engineers themselves are the endangered species.

Sometimes feels that way

It is the journey that matters, not the destination

Sometimes, it can be a long and winding road

Many of those crafts (ours included) have on line presence and I was disappointed that they did not mention this.  There are a lot of crafts people who are making their knowledge available through the likes of Youtube which hopefully will be archived for future generations.

Yes even down here in Australia crafts/hobbies are losing popularity. back in the early '70's I began a lifelong hobby, lapidary, which was very strong but now is very weak and mostly we old farts are keeping it going with a sprinkling of younger people. Its my stress reliever when I hit a snag and go back to faceting or grinding a stone. My tumbler tends to be running most times with offcuts and bits and pieces I find on my wanders.
I used to have a friend.....but the rope broke and he ran away :(....Good news everybody I have another friend...I used chain this time :)

I couldn't see casting fondling under any of those headings :headscratch:
